Locally, even among non football types, there is considerable annoyance at what has happened. He was a fixture at local schools and kids parties and other community events. He was a means by which Arsenal reached out to the local community but like so much else, the local community don't matter as much as numbers of pay per view viewers across the world.
And without intending to talk law to a brief, I assume it could be quite problematic if you're making a bunch of people redundant and make an exception for one employee, letting him stay on the books for no pay (which is what he offered the club).
