the whole reason the premier league is so popular is based on the passion of the fans. It has the most widely supported number of clubs in the world.
Although there are some amusing results being thrown up recently this IMHO is because they are just like training games. The players can't take it seriously without 1,000, 10,000, 50,000 or more (delete as appropriate for your club) screaming you on.
