There are things like the Thule Easybase, not cheap, and have pretty low load capacity.

Sounds like that explains why you don't see them about. Probably similar cost and less faff to hire a van or pay someone for those odd occasions.
Yeah, it just buy a small trailer if you have somewhere to store it, can pick up second hand ones for less than that carrier and tow 750kg on a standard license.
