I know crittal is in in a big way right now, but I'm not 100% it's going to stay in.

• #36253
I hear you, but if we like it does that matter? It's not like it's a new product.

• #36254
If you like it then nothing else matters!

From repairing doors and windows. I think bifold doors need to be done by a place that specialises in them or at least does them fairly often.
When they are new and perfectly set up, I think they look good. However a bit of wear and going out of adjustment multiplied across 4 to 6 leaves, usually means they are shit.
Aluminium frames are a must (imo) as pvc isn't stiff enough and the mounting holes are more likely to elongate and go out of adjustment.
Spares are kinda pricey and they seem to be going obsolete quite quickly. If the rollers need replacing on the master leaf, you may have to remove all the leaves first to get them out of the tracks.
Personality I'd go for double sliding (fixed, slide | slide, fixed) or French doors with two fixed panes.

Triple or quad sliding would be better for an alternative to bifold.
I think french doors are wildly underrated and almost wish I got them as in oak they would have matched the interior. -

the other option is traditional crittal style french doors. We could have two 1 metre doors

Oh Jesus now I'm really torn

I think even when crittal is not in it's not out though.
Not like concrete kitchens. Hard on feet, hard on kids falling, hard on noise, drop a glass it'll shatter to smithereens. And they'll date badly. No thanks.

I have discovered that just about everything is hard on kids falling. Or maybe kids falling is hard on just about everything. Need to check Newton's laws.

this chat makes me thankful the place we’re buying cant be extended.

• #36263
why? don't you like throwing money at things endlessly / alienating your neighbours / eating packet ramen for 12-18 months / dizzying analysis paralysis ?

• #36264
ahhh the good life.

Triple or quad sliding would be better for an alternative to bifold.
A triple would be nice for 4.4m
The logistics and cost of ever needing to replace the glass scares me off oversized glass

Really don't like sliding doors - they remind me of my grandads bungalow in Clacton.

And washing up in your bath, don’t forget that part.

Even the light buzz of chat as you discuss your #400kkitchen will become unbearably harsh.

Totally understand that but the new ones are worlds apart, slim frames and integrated handles are beautiful.
-
• #36271
Way too chunky.

Fuck me, imagine all the flies, mozzies and moths you'll get in your gaff with one of those big open to the garden kitchen sliding door things... No thanks...
I do everything I can to keep bugs out of our place, fly screens on all windows and doors, etc... Nothing is getting the fuck in...

You would have thought that 100 years of expensively retrofitting commercial buildings would have helped architects understand this.

They look lovely.
The real kicker in that article is that they casually bought the 'base' house for something like 1.1m before spending the extra .25. I'm in the wrong line of work.
