Thanks, yes looks to be slim pickings, going to see how I get on with the sale of the current car.
Thought I could save a bit on insurance too but whenever I pop the learner driver on it bumps the price up considerably. For example the mk3 golf I posted earlier...

Rightly or wrongly, I'd do a search on Autotrader with the distance you are willing to travel for the right car and then just see what is available for <£1k and in an auto. From recent searches, the amount of auto's for sale is really small, especially in the small hatchback market so it maybe a case of taking the best example of a small bunch.
