  • Still, would have been nice if we had a government that could play a bad hand well.

Yep, I'm genuinely shocked at how badly the UK has handled it. Apart from the US, I can't think of a country that's managed it worse. It's embarrassing and I can't keep up with what an onmishambles it is.

  • Then again I'm also shocked that people I know who've just taken an international flight and are in "quarantine" are a) allowed to just wander out from Heathrow Airport with no checks and no ongoing monitoring and b) are now happily enjoying the UK, admittedly not near other people, but how the fuck is it quarantine when you're in the fucking park and not indoors?

  • but how the fuck is it quarantine when you're in the fucking park and not indoors?

It isn't. People arriving from abroad that are required to self isolate aren't allowed to leave their home.

There was some survey somewhere that suggested about 20% of people follow the rules when required to self isolate for any reason.

  • Like that man from Bolton who by the sounds of it was responsible for the spike in that area?

  • Not that people aren't shit but I don't think the communication has been helped by our "ooh a terrible terrible lockdown, I can only go out for a run once a day. And to the shops." I think a lot of people mistakenly think that's the same as quarantine.

  • LOL I just read the post you linked to and we are word-for-word matchy matchy on our views of SK. Great minds think alike!

  • My mate whos a teacher was telling me how crazy it is. "Bubbles" are dropping like flies into 2 weeks of quarantine and whole year groups are being sent home. A kid in his class who's mother is a nurse tested positive, with no symptoms, is getting tested and if he's positive they are sent home for another 2 weeks.

He asked another kid (7 or 8 year old) where his home work was and he said he cant get it because it's in Daddy's room and they aren't allowed in there. Turns out his dad has it and they are still sending him to school. I really feel sorry for the teachers, they are getting thrown to the wolves.

  • That's interesting - people have been telling me that it's fine as long as you don't mingle with others, which (unless you live in the deepest countryside or only go out at 4am) I think would be hard to manage. I find it hard to tell people off as I feel horribly horribly guilty at having escaped the worst of things in both China and Europe (not a single day of quarantine or lockdown, no tests, etc). So I'll just gripe on the internet instead.

  • I have 2 teachers that I'm very close to, I live with one in fact and they're saying exactly the same.

  • This is the bit that fucks me off no end.
It seems daft that all these hotels are by the airport, could be turned into "quarantine rooms".

  • My wife is a teacher, secondary school, down here in Devon. It's pretty crazy, they are having to deal with staggered timetables, which means breaks are all at different times, which means the number of teachers needed to do "Duty" has increased massively, so there are now days where she literally can't go to the toilet or eat, as she is watching kids 100% of the day, and they can't ask another teacher to step in as that breaks bubbles.
Even down here with the levels of infection are really low there are loads of kids off, 11 in a class of 30 yesterday, none with confirmed infections, all just waiting for tests. Kids all been at home for 6 months, so are coming back and getting colds etc. but testing not happening quick enough to keep them in school.

  • I’m in quarantine in HK, here its home quarantine but with a tracker on your wrist so they know if you are out. I’m also certain to get a couple of spot checks to make sure the tracker hasn’t been tampered with.

HK is exempt from any self isolation requirements so I was free to wander about the UK at will. Didn’t mingle much though, I tried to minimise contact with you diseased fuckers.

  • people have been telling me that it's fine as long as you don't mingle with others

People either can't be bothered to read the rules or don't want to follow them. You can't even leave the house to walk a dog.

  • People either can't be bothered to read the rules or don't want to follow them. You can't even leave the house to walk a dog.

That doesn't apply to me as I don't even have a dog.

    etc.

  • Crazy, but well dressed lady being refused entry to Uniqlo on Oxford Street just now due to not wearing a mask.

She had a Micro SD card between her fingers and was sliding it in and out of a SD card adaptor saying repeatedly to the security guy, "THIS is the mask, this IS the mask".

    ..

  • How not to do QR codes. but, unfortunately, how the Track and Trace project is doing it.

This is not how you do it and I wonder if they got any technical advice from anyone on the matter first.

Tl:Dr lag in production of chemicals and machines, they adjust production based on expected demand.

So...you can't just increase like that, you need to ask a month in advance, at least.

  • Pretty sure we will hit the target, just like we hit all the meaningless ones Hancock set.

  • If only there was some way for the government to have predicted that there might be an increased testing requirement heading into a winter while reopening your economy and schools during a pandemic.

  • if only..

  • Nope...have 50% off at restaurants instead. Not going to lie I enjoyed that scheme alot but it was absolutely crazy from a public health perspective.

  • I have some sympathy if they got it wrong by a certain margin after trying to do their best estimates. It happens at work, so...

However, it hard to believe that is what happened after all the other world beating ballsups.

  • I didn't understand much of that but yeah there are QR code posters all over my workplace and apparently they don't work so we are already used to ignoring "important health info posters" a week into return to work...

  • Isn't the best way to use QR codes to not to fucking use QR codes.
