• Anyone have any good off road routes starting in/around west london?
I would be on knobbly 38s but a mate might be on 35cs.
I was thinking trying the thames canal towpath out to marlow, i managed to get lost on a road ride out there a few weeks back and found myself on the towpath, it seemed nice.

    Thanks :)

  • Wherabouts in West London and in which direction?
Proper off-road (i.e. mountain bike), or just "not on road" - i.e. road bike and chunky tyres/gravel bike?

  • There's not a continuous Thames towpath cycle route to Marlow if that's what you mean. NCN 4 goes that way but the longest continuous Thames part goes from just North of Kingston to Weybridge. Although lots of people cycle the Putney-Kingston towpath section too.

Edit: also it will be very busy at weekends especially in good weather, around Richmond, Kingston, Hampton Court. Expect small dogs off the lead.

  • I used to do a mostly off road ride to Windsor from Richmond. Pretty easy to connect up with a bit of dicking around at Weybridge and Staines. I can dig it out if you want, but it's easy to follow; follow the thames on the south side to Weybridge, cross to the north side at Chertsy Bridge then take an immediate left and follow the road then gravel path to Staines.

  • was planning on tubing out to uxbridge and riding from there, and probably closer to not road, i wont be on an mtb

  • ah ok that was my plan scuppered haha, i think it will be wednesday as i have the day off work so hopefully not too busy

  • ah nice, that sounds like a shout, ill have a look thanks :)

  • Check ridewithgps for mtb/cross rides in the area.

The Thames is a river 🙂

Both the Thames riverside path and all the paths along the Jubilee river are perfectly fine on 35s, or even skinnier tyres if dry. You have to use tarmac from Maidenhead bridge to Boulters Lock, and it's a bit sketchy from there to Marlow. If you're starting from Uxbridge you'll be on the canal to Slough, not sure what that's like as it's the wrong side of town for me.

  • Not sure where to post this question...anyone familiar with the Giro cafe gravel routes on their website?

I'm sure their Tuesday belgie loop used to have a stretch through Moore Place golf course but that now seems to be cut off by a locked gate. Looks like it's accessible from a different road but not sure if cycling is allowed there now? Shame if not as it was a nice end to a ride and avoids some of busy main road.

  • 'FP 43' i.e. footpath across the middle here? https://www.opencyclemap.org/?zoom=17&lat=51.3646&lon=-0.37344&layers=B0000. The golf club has gone bankrupt or something.

  • Yes, that's it, thanks. I guess I assumed it was a rideable since it was on the Giro site. Oh well. Not used that map website before - looks useful
