I didn't even notice a smell.
Just went to remove the USB cable
and it took the socket and a bit of the surrounding plastic away with it.
Suggests the plastic got hot enough to melt but not enough to even singe a bit.
Was it Aldi or Lidl that did the Moon Comet copies a few years ago? Those were ok, until water ingress (and being bashed and run over by mini c00ps) finally killed them.
I think it was - i've still got a rear of those that i use. it was meant to be a cheap stop-gap till i got a better light, but never got round to replacing it.
As a balance I have both front and back lights from Aldi. Not had any problems like this with either. They are both Moon copies so the front is a strip light (not the style being sold now) and the back is the Comet LED copy. The front is ok but the back is very good; bright and a long battery life.
