Internally routing or Hiding Di2

  • We're doing a fully internal Ti jobby at work, got a Chinese carbon fork with a drilled steerer shipped over and another one to stress test. Headset is FSA and has some split races in or something and bars are some fully integrated things, I'm not too sure on the details as I've put as much distance as I can between it and myself. Internal routing, especially involving bars as well as frame, is fucking annoying.

  • Amen to that.

Still curious about the forks. You guys drilled them or they come pre drilled? As much as I'm wary of holy steerers, curious about implementing it for shits and giggles. In reality, for your average dentist, this shit as as useful as Kleenex for a condom.

  • Came pre drilled, but we weren't too sure about how legit their claims of being tested to the right standards were, so ordered two and got one tested, all good apparently.

  • Got a source for them?

  • I can find out.

  • That looks quite nice. I'm (slowly) building up a 650C Softride into a flat bar bike with XT Di2 and when I was picking out components the Pro Tharsis stem and handlebar combo also looked good to me. You can hide the junction box inside the stem, and it also has a collar underneath that you can use to preload the headset bearings, so that instead of a star nut you can put the Di2 battery inside the steerer (although I don't see why you can't just use an expander to preload the bearings, tighten the stem bolts, and then remove the expander to fit in the battery carrier). It also comes in road bike-suitable lengths and a 17-degree option. I didn't end up buying it because I'm in Canada and I couldn't find any shops that would ship it to me.

  • The problem I see with those is that I would firstly not want the junction hidden in the stem because it would mean removing the bars every time you need to charge and I’d look to use the bar end junction instead.
And secondly that it doesn’t give an easy option for routing wires into the frame, just in and out of the steerer for the battery

  • Bar end junction and hide an inline wireless module in the stem so that if you need to do some routine maintenance and have to swap a headset bearing you don't have to rewire the bike or bars or something stupid, just the brakes.

  • Only thing I can add is, I’ve been riding my Cielo with a drilled steerer for 7 years now. Not shying away from any cobbles, gravel or any other severe beatings and my steerer still looks brand new (apart from the holes). I do realise this is sample size 1.

  • i'm soon gonna use that tharsis system on my croix de fer.

    #nothelpful

  • Yeah, fair enough. It looked fine for my needs since I'm not going for full integration - just retrofitting internal routing and finding a place to hide the battery on the Softride sounds like it will be tricky enough - and XT Di2 has a charging port on the display.

  • I'd be interested in knowing the source too. The Deda and FSA internal routing bobbins seem relatively easy to source, a fork with fully internal routing less so.

  • I think we've got one spare we can sell and access to more, £275 apparently. I'm only in that workshop on Wednesdays but will get more details and some pics then.

  • I know it's tapered steerer, through axle and flat mount, and black.

  • No no no no. You don't just offer a flat price, you target the weirdos here and make them battle for it.

@Jaap Alloy steerer on that? It's in one of your old threads isn't it?

  • I’m a weirdo but I’m not paying £275 for a no name Chinese carbon fork lol

  • I said there's only one spare right now, gotta bait it gently.

  • Yeah, I think we're including some of the price of getting it tested properly in that. That'll be the price it gets sold at when included with bikes we sell. I dunno if I can wrangle some sort of discount for just fork orders. I'll find out properly on Wednesday.

  • nah nah nah. that cielo was full carbon steerer. several followers went mental over this ..."i hope you have good dental insurance " etc.

  • Actually, none spare but can get them in 2 weeks and do a bit cheaper.

  • Nope, it's a full carbon enve road fork.

You can find some pictures of the process in the bottom of this: http://crankzinnig.nl/project-droomfiets-cielo-road-racer-disc/

  • If it makes anyone feel worse, I was planning on using a Hylix fork from China.
Given that's reason enough to be wearing a gum shield, I don't think I'll go ahead and drill the steerer.

  • Did you drill the top of the steerer behind the stem too?

  • Just drill it and then reinforce it with your recently learned carbon expertise. A slightly more cultured version of @jdmitch ‘s bolt that sucker right on.

What kind of loads are on the piece of steerer between the two headset bearings anyway?
