About to buy something off eBay, seller looks totally legit and we’re corresponding on email, I’m assuming it’s risky though to send money direct via PayPal?

I think - probably learned on here - that Paypal protection is far greater/usurps any decision eBay may make so that paying 'goods and services' is exactly the same as buying using Paypal on eBay?

This. I had a thing a while back (Facebook marketplace) and I had to whine to paypal. They pulled the money back out of the sellers account pretty quickly - if anything it was quicker and more straight forward than if it had been through eBay.
