Massively depends on budget.
I would look at panel type, backlighting tech as well as software. I'd try to avoid Android as the base software where possible.
If you can, also try to avoid side lit or minimum dimming zone TVs at the lower end of the price brackets.

There weren't a huge number of options in that size.However, I ended up getting the previous generation TX-40GX800B for just over £400. It seems the main update was the smart tv part and the price difference meant that I got an Nvidia shield for that element which is far superior to any smart TV OS.

I appreciate it's not very exciting but any recommendations for a smaller size TV? I think the maximum space I have available at the moment would be for a 40-44" TV.
