my golf is the same year and has nowhere near that level of corrosion.

I think Mercedes bought a lot of very cheap underseal and paint that year.

This is what's putting me off buying a Mk2 MX5 - seems they're all rotten and the only variable is whether or not you can see it.

That’s on my list - with it being a group N car it still carries a lot of “production” stuff like central locking.
That’s all going in the bin as soon as I get chance

Yes, it's a worry. In some ways better to buy a confirmed rot-box for pennies and have it fixed yourself, then you know that you're starting from a good foundation.
Better than buying something for strong money that turns out to be a rusty doily covered in thick paint for the sale.

How often are you supposed to pull these things out of the canal to get the hull painted?

Cheers, The roads are so good, I’m planning on doing some gravel events too, so I’ll post some more vids as and when. Sounds really good I think, the exhaust is pretty minimal with no silencers and Just two resonators

I spotted this beast yesterday. I'm not entirely sure what it is, I thought either a motorhome type thing or some sort of weird sporty horsebox?

My mk1 is just back from having both sills replaced. I tried to get a good one but it only lasted a couple of years before failing its mot. I'm with dammit on this one. Buy a rotten looking one and have it repaired.

Oh that's a good shout actually! I should have got more photos. It had an awning on the other side so maybe the idea is you drive your race car to a track and use this bad boy as your mobile HQ when you get there.

I agree. Either buy a basket case cheap or one that has been done recently for strong money. Cars sorted at TheMX5Restorer normally have been done to a high standard which you often find on the usual mx5 forums.

Ta. Found a specialist independent close to my flat; inspection is £25 and they've got a bunch of excellent reviews. Booked.

You'd have more luck finding a none rusty MK1 to be honest, the MK2 had a manufacturing faulty with the front chassis rails meaning they will all go there unfortunately. The MK1's are just rusty mainly due to age so you can find ones that have been undersealed and looked after if you're patient.

Yeah we got it as a cheap daily for the wife about 4 or 5 years ago when it was bog standard but totally rust free. It's been one of the most reliable things I've ever owned!
It's still mint underneath but it's starting to show its age now paint wise, especially where I've rolled/battered the arches out for the wider wheels and cracked all the paint haha. I'll get it tarted up at some point though. -

I remember it too, that was on my loop to Box Mountain.

• #57748
Yep! I was out for a ride so not my neck of the woods but there's some lovely lanes round there.

Ha ha, I too was on my way to Box Hill. My first time up there and it was lovely!

Keeping in tune with thread you also get some tasty motors round Box.
Saw a Skyline meet the other day.
This car looks perfect from the outside, which is somewhat worrying.
