I've missed some pages in this thread, so I don't know if anyone has posted this yet, sorry if repost--Michael Fuller, former chief constable of Kent and the only black officer in this kind of position in the UK so far:

Next time you listen to Eric Clapton remember this little speech before a concert in the midlands "Do we have any foreigners in the audience tonight? If so, please put up your hands … So where are you? Well wherever you all are, I think you should all just leave. Not just leave the hall, leave our country … I don’t want you here, in the room or in my country. Listen to me, man! I think we should send them all back. Stop Britain from becoming a black colony. Get the foreigners out. Get the wogs out. Get the coons out. Keep Britain white … The black wogs and coons and Arabs and f*cking Jamaicans don’t belong here, we don’t want them here. This is England, this is a white country, we don’t want any black wogs and coons living here. We need to make clear to them they are not welcome. England is for white people, man … This is Great Britain, a white country, what is happening to us, for f*ck’s sake? … Throw the wogs out! Keep Britain white!” Don't worry it was 1972, and this tirade was the start of rock against racism. Clapton claimed he was only half racist as he had black friends and dated black women. But it is ok, as he is ashamed for following Enoch Powell and it was the drink and drugs that brought out the racism.
TLDR Eric Clapton, the racist tory supporter, blames drink and drugs for being racist but isn't racist as he has black friends and slept with a black women.
EDIT: My comment probably has nothing to do with BLM. It is my issue with foreigners in the audience comment, because that is me..my parents were foreigners, born here but never english. When I learnt about Eric clapton I wish i never had purchased any of his output.
Even the piano bit in Layla isn't his...

Next time you listen to Eric Clapton
Not something I need to worry about then...
Edit: here's an article about the thing from a couple of years ago
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.insidehook.com/article/music/eric-clapton-racism/amp
I know it's a bit of a derail but I love the fact that the journalist not only stomps on Clapton for being a racist maniac in 1976 and presumably onwards, but also for being shit at his day job.

fully agree he has never been forgiven by the black community.Especially as he completely culturally appropriated black music.

Really liked Clapton, and could not believe what he said. Thought it was lies, when I read it, as he plays the blues and the blues roots are very clear.
The comment that gets me is that he has black friends and dated black women, yet came out with this abuse. There was graffiti of Clapton is God, but should have Clapton is a racist.

Had a conversation of sorts with a guy at work who made some pretty unacceptable comments during lunch. He went on about different derogatory terms for black people and how it's only words and who cares etc. Tried to reason with him but it was quite hard as he obviously enjoyed winding everybody up. Then when me and another person got angry and told him we didn't care about his reasoning and would he please just stop, he tried to justify his remarks by pointing out he's foreign (white, from Iceland) and 'knows what it's like' (yeah right) and also has a cousin whose wife is black....

Dob the cunt in.

I'd be happy to have a conversation with this fella of Scandinavian decent.
Being a foreign and being black are completely different. His ignorance of the fact is mind-boggling, his casual ignorance is why we probably can't have a conversation. As people are fed up of talking ffs -

mind-boggling
This.

take him aside and give him an opportunity to listen and learn, if that's too much to ask - shop the fucker. Just a matter of time before he spouts that sort of bullshit in front of a client, at which point your place of employ is open to all manner of organisational risk.
but also, fuck this basic racist.

Yeah didn't know this either and it's a stretch to think that any apology can make up for what he said. My mum always pegged him as a horrible prick but I had that down to his abusiveness in a relationship with someone my mum is a fan of (whose name escapes me right now). Shame on me for accepting that about him and not enquiring further.
From memory there was nothing about this on the BBC4 Blues Britannia documentary which feels like a glaring omission. Good on Red Saunders for going in hard.
It's gonna be an interesting chat between me and my old man who's a fan. In fairness he's been pretty good at listening and reflecting on stuff so far.

Sounds like a basic cunt. People like that think it's a power trip to 'debate'. You might know him a little better but there's no point wasting your anger and energy on trying to reason with someone who doesn't care enough to engage. If you want them to just stop, forcing it from above might be the best way.

shop the fucker.
I've reached the end of my second language proficiency with that one I'm afraid. Kill him? Fire him?

Step-daughter's friend, whose name and profile make it clear he's black, tries to book three Air BnB properties and is told all three are unavailable. Step-daughter, who is of mixed race but it is not obvious from her name or profile, then tries to book the same properties for the exact same dates and is offered all three.

report his actions to his line manager
Have done so.
I've also written to my bosses at length about our need for a structured discussion about racial inequality and education with the aim of wiping out casual racism at work, with links to a few educational resources I think could help. Got a very positive response from one of them so really hope we can get the process started asap.
I don't really understand it, but one motivation, apart from general issues that a person might have, could be guilt about history and present, perhaps especially in the case of an academic who knows about both. Still bizarre and indefensible.
