A couple of years later, we had a builder in to redo our kitchen, at that point they found the cause of the damp, which was that the washing machine drain pipe wasn't actually connected up

Yeah - it was a bit of a wtf moment.

My builder took photos of it when he pulled the floor up to prove that it was just draining into the soil as it was so unbelievably stupid :D
