• That is about the age/mileage of my gti and i am starting to have to fix more stuff each year. this year i will have to replace the central locking in the driver's door, which will be £££. last year it was the rear control arm(s) and relevant stuff. that had to include tyres, too.

i reckon i spend a grand a year on maintenance, which will only go up. the car has been pretty much reliable and hasn't let me down yet, apart from trying to work out the issue with the door a few months back.

go for the dsg if you can

  • That's good to know. I don't really mind regular maintenance if it's relatively predictable, it's the wild swings that I find hard to cope with. Will bear it in mind. Thanks dude.

  • I bought a 12yo straight-six beemer for £4K with 110,000 miles and it’s the best money I’ve spent on a car. It’s always a gamble but it’s the way in to affordable fun. First year I sorted tyres, second year brakes, this year starter motor. Probs comes in about £800 a year without doing any work myself.
