  • Sure there will be some Xbox One games that are backwards compatible but there's no confirmed Series X games with release dates yet, and the first ones to come out for it will be "enhanced" for the Series rather than made for the platform like the new Ass's Creed.

  • Wow. That’s cheap.

  • Anyone know if you can play PS3 games on the PS4 through their game pass thing (PS Now?)

  • With the Xbox game pass do they have any backwards compatible games from previous consoles available on it digitally? Also is there a list of games that are currently available digitally out on the One generation? Say I want to play Tour De France 2011 from the 360 that is currently backwards compatible on the One and so should be on the Series S/X, I'd imagine I'd need the physical copy in order to play this and it won't be available on Game Pass or available as a digital download?

I Plan to get the Series X, and hope to use the backwards compatibility to play a bunch of games on the One generation that I've skipped over the last few years so I'm assuming I'll definitely need the Series X over the Series S to do this as not all games will be available digitally?

  • 2011 is not on the BC list.

    But tdf 2009 is.

But you can no longer buy the game digitally.

    So you'd need the disc.

Any game released on Xbox One (minus Kinect games) will be compatible with the Series X either through the digital version if you already own it or any disc you're able to buy.

If you're only interested in Xbox One games and a few 360 games (that you can still buy digitally) then the Series S will be fine. If not, you'd need the Series X.

Also - there are some 360 games that are BC on Game Pass. You can have a look through the list here. Obviously these can change over time...

  • Cheers, I was confused as to whether i would need to play the PS3 games on a PS3.
Turns out PS now isn't compatible with PS3 anyway!

  • Very useful, thanks. Was going off the wikipedia list for a random 360 game that I thought unlikely to be available digitally. Imagine the Official list you've linked will be more accurate.

Handy to know though. My thought was it could be cheaper to get second hand copies of the games at CEX and stuff rather than the digital copies, though not sure it would be enough of a saving to cover the additional cost of the X over the S. Do wonder if the second hand market will be effected with prices staying quite high for desirable titles for the first few months of the release of the new console. I do have a lot of Original and 360 games at my parents that I might fancy playing in the future, so that might force my hand too.

  • Yeah, the official list is definitely up to date. Worth noting that I believe the BC work is now finished meaning they're not adding any more OG Xbox or 360 titles in the future. I guess this could change if certain series or long-forgotten games get sequels or remasters (see them adding RDR when RDR2 was announced) so that list is pretty much final.

If titles you want to play aren't on that list, it doesn't matter if you own the disc, you're not playing them on the One X or the Series S/X. Only way to play those is by buying an OG Xbox / 360.

  • finished TLOU 2 the other day

LOVED it and don't understand the majority of the criticisms tbh

my only real fault was that they did a lot of work to make you think about how bad it was to kill other people... but don't give you many options to avoid it. No non lethal takedowns, and more than a few scenarios where you are forced to kill rather than sneak through.

Now that the fireflies are confirmed to be still around i hope we get a 3rd game sometime

  • Yeah was aware of that one. I think it's mostly some big game series that I used to enjoy and then have missed the sequels on Xbox One so might end up with the Series S and get them on Digital in the end. Will see what the price is looking like in the UK market when announced too.

edit: just seen the UK price for the S was already reported so that's easier to work out

  • Yeah, £250.

    Ridiculous value.

  • I dont understand how at that price you'd be inclined to go for the more pricey one?

  • $299 over this side of the pond so $330 after tax. Mad cheap. Apparently avail for $24.99 per month inclusive of Game Pass and XBL. Jeez. This is making my PC a little redundant...

@spenceey future proofing I guess? 4 teraflops vs 12. Some people still like discs.

  • Physical media, better graphical performance, larger storage.

  • The S can't do 4k . The X will be a good chunk more powerful, my hunch is we'll see a lot of games made for the X that end up being downgraded to 30fps on the S. Microsoft is pushing hard their "Smart Delivery" where you buy the game for one platform and you can play it on any, which is cool and all but probably means they won't be particularly optimised for any one of them.

I'm not just trying to bash on Microsoft, I enjoy playing on my xbox, but it feels to me like they're releasing this new generation of consoles as an incremental upgrade to the One, kinda like buying a new GPU for your PC. Without any big name games to launch with and the promise that basically any games you buy for at least 6 months after will also be on the One make it feel like a "nice to have" rather than a whole new ecosystem to buy in to.

  • That's fair. But perhaps that's how they want it to feel? Who wants to buy into a new ecosystem? The nice thing when jumping from the 360 to the One was that it felt familiar. Much like upgrading from one iPhone to another. Except there's a huge time difference from when the One was released to now, so the console is way more powerful than the last gen. I agree that there's not that many launch titles, but that's okay, they'll come in time.

It's the perfect console for me. Cheap, 1440p (more than enough when sitting a 3 feet away from a 1440p monitor), allows access to games that aren't available on PC. Perfect.

  • that's what gta5 and skyrim are for

  • also... it's cuet (unlike the PS5 which is fugly)

  • PS5 price and release to be announced tomorrow

  • I think it'll be a good console and Game Pass is really good, I just don't think they're going to get any kind the number of sales as they're hoping.

  • The one X was only released 2 years ago. It will interesting to compare the two, how 'next gen' the series s will feel etc

  • Yeah. I mean, I was obviously talking about the original 2013 Xbox One. Also, Xbox One X was released in November 2017. That's three years ago. Ages in technology. Even just in terms of UI, let a lone hardware.

  • I guess they also assume that the type of people who bought the one X are likely to make the jump to the full series X (or both) anyway

  • THPS1+2 runs really nicely on my mobile 1660ti / i7-9750h at max everything at 1080p and it looks fantastic too. Pure nostalgia right now. I've lost my touch - or maybe I just am not as good as I thought I was the last time I played a THPS game but my goodness - so much fun.
