So I did this at the weekend - thanks for the inspiration @Thrasher . I decided on Thursday night then caught the 7.43 from Paddington on Saturday morning to Reading and started and ended from there.
The bit from Reading to the South Downs Way is pretty easy and fast but from then on in it gets harder. I rode a rigid Ritchey P29er and was very happy I didn't choose my CX bike. Even though on the flats it was slower, there were a fair few sections on the South Downs Way and Ridgeway that I was very happy I had MTB tyres for. In particular with the recent rain some steep climbs and descents had become very rocky.
It's a really great route, just was harder than I expected. Nothing very technical but it's not all smooth going. A fair bit of sand too in the first half.
Re the firing ranges you pass by them but not through them so I don't think you need to worry about that. They're a bit creepy though.
I had dinner and bivied in the garden of the Black Horse in Hurdcott https://goo.gl/maps/T6zvrSt3pmo9HMC47 and would 100% reccomend this as a plan. The landlord was fantastic, and even put my bike in the lock up so I didn't have to worry about it overnight. Beer was great too and a cute pub dog another plus
I did it in 2 days, but if you want to be more leisurely then 3 would probably be more fun.
