  • You may want to mention it weighs about 1kg.

  • The raw flaps are good. Well thought out and they come with good hardware. Think they're tougher than rubber tbh.

  • Didn't think weight would be an issue with all the retro oddities people cycle around.

  • I've had a Raw in the past, thought it worked well.

Only complaint I had of it was that the reflective graphics were just a sticker that came off after a couple of wet rides leaving a plain black flap and I thought the price was a bit much for that but apart from that it worked great.

  • What's the go to for the much praised 3rd flap? I've got some SKS Bleumel 45s on order and was going to use wide Raw flaps. Does the shorter, wider front flap work well as a 3rd flap or is it too wide?

  • SJS sell the Farher flaps which are quite good. They're meant to be zip ties on, but I used standard drill hole and bolt method.

Nice and flexible, but not too flexible.

Dunno if you were an early adopter, I wasn’t and this hasn’t happened to either of my pairs. Maybe they switched vinyls. One thing I did do is trim off a small strip of the vinyl with a stanley along the bottom edge, cos it goes right flush to the cut and I thought it would get tatty when the flap got twanged on stuff.

  • Yeah it was quite a while ago so could be.

I think mine started peeling at the bottom and then before long it was all just hingin. Maybe if I’d trimmed it it would saved it.

Lasted for a good long while after that happened anyway though. Only got rid of it because I got rid of the guards it was attached to.

  • Thanks, seems like they’re the forum choice for a reason. I’ll order one.

  • A front guard to protect a dynamo light? Does such a thing exist?

I have a headlight mounted centrally, just above my front tyre. Currently I’m running the lightweight noguards system. This light is going to get wasted.

I don’t really want proper guards on this bike (because the wheels come out so often for storage and transport, it rarely goes on group rides in the rain, it has track ends, etc). Is there a very short front mudguard that still has ok coverage around the top/front of the wheel?

The bike has 25mm tyres, has plenty of room for a guard and has eyelets.

Is butchering a Bluemel my best bet?

  • Does anyone have a set of the 700c slim carbon mudguards they’d sell me? Can’t justify the £165 cost for them new and am tempted by the various pdw in the classifieds but everything else on the bike is crabon (with ceramic rims) 🤷‍♂️

  • Could you use something like this? Designed for keeping the worst of the mud of mtb suspension, might work?

  • I don’t think that could be persuaded to go under a caliper. But it’s interesting ... as a template starting-point for something smaller/home-made.

Google ‘shortie mudguards’ something will be modifiable to suit?

  • That’s helpful! Thank you. These turned up. They’re 35mm wide ... so ideal.

  • It's not, it just felt very heavy when compared to a Brompton one...

  • Anyone got a link for 26”, 65mm wide mudguards? Prob only willing to shell out for something like sks bluemels.

Seems to be slim pickings at the moment stock wise.

  • I have a set of 60mm SKS Bluemels ‘Commuter’ up for grabs, if that’s any help?

  • Sad facts, I have 3 sets of velo orange fenders for one bike.

    • 700 52mm Zeppelins - work well for 43 GK sks.
    • 700 45mm hammered - works well for 38 GK
    • 650 58mm smooth - works well with 650 48s, but also gets away with 700 32s. If you can deal with the excess width.

Can't say all sets match the style of the bike. But hey.

Issue you have covering that range is mostly how the front mount is behind the fork which means it lifts up at the front if you want a close fit to the wheel. And that annoys me greatly. Maybe about as much as it annoys my wife me changing fenders every few days when I switch out wheels or tyres.

  • I got 60mm flingers from sjs. Thicker stays than sks

  • I don’t know whether to applaud or stage an intervention.

  • Cheers. I can’t imagine anything worse than having to swap sets of ‘guards, so may need to think further.

  • Maybe it's OTT, but this is the 52s with 38mm tyres.

  • If you want to really save then I have some of the narrow Alu Radials that I’ll be looking to shift before long. Still in the packaging.

  • Any recommendations for mudguards with disc brakes 700x28 tyres
    cheers k
