Nah they know exactly what their market is. It's an accessible, "affordable" entry level Rolex and I'm sure many of them get bought as gifts for wives and daughters by those who can afford to. The Dads want Explorers and Submariners, the OP isn't really aimed at them, though the black dial is still present and correct and in 36mm it's really probably the most well designed and tasteful Rolex in the current range.
I'm in agreement. I personally think that no date sub is best, but suspect its a ostentatious footballers watch in person.
The gold or the black OP I think is great. My only issue with mine is its quite small on my wrist. I'm sad that the white is now gone though.
The colours can fuck off. I can see they're trying to be fun. Get the next gen interested in them. Personally, I'd say don't make your watches so expensive and make more (for 2nd hand market sake) and you'd get more yoof engagement.
