  • My 2008 imac has stopped loading google maps? This is the end right?

In a predicament, I have a 2012 mbp which doesn't have any adobe stuff which I need for work, so mainly use a 2008 imac which has everything already installed that I need for work, adobe, office etc. except now google maps isn't loading which is key. It runs on Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63b) and doesn't want to update.

I'm not really sure what would be the best course of action going forward, do I get a newer laptop, run a larger screen at the studio and bring laptop back back and forth from studio? I don't see this being great in the long term as its more likely that I will be bringing work home etc.

Do I get something like a mac mini 2012, soup it up and attach two screens for work at the studio space, then try and get my 2012 mbp fixed? with an added screen at home on my desk to recreate the imac set up?

Or would getting a more modern 2nd hand imac be better in the long term for the studio?

Use is limited to mainly for basic stuff like research, photoshop, indesign, lightroom general file management, no video or anything major. Actually, sometimes having 10/20 medium sized images in photoshop? No music or large storage really needed for the studio as its all spotify atm, but would be a bonus and prob a good investment.

Also, after reading sharkstars post last page, it got me realising maybe something like a 2012 mac mini would be better as its less of a financial risk? and could be cheaper in the long run. Don't really want to spend more than £500 right now.

Also my mid 2012 mbp needs battery replacing, can anyone on here sort this out for me and maybe give it a once over? Have managed to upgrade the memory but could prob do with the ssd upgrade.

    Thanks

To just address this first point - it's the browser you're using that does not load google maps any more, presumably because it's just too old and doesn't support certain things.
So, as a small workaround which buys you some time - could you maybe download / use a different browser that still lets you use maps?

  • You can try downloading the newest version of Firefox that will run on Lion:

tbh I wouldn't spend any money on upgrading or buying 2012 hardware, as it's definitely on borrowed time. Put the money towards something newer with some more life left in it.

Curry’s have the Mac Mini for £400 on their eBay site. It’s the 2018 model, which is the same spec as the current one from the Apple store just with a 128gb SSD, but is £400 cheaper. It’s a pretty decent price, you can get a lot of SSD or Ram for the price difference.
