Anyone with an allotment?

  • Turns out I’ve got an almond tree which is pretty cool, it needs a good bit of work but it’ll be a nice tree when I’m done.

Amazing, you'll have to make marzipan. :)

I didn't even know almonds grew in this climate.

  • I’m growing some but I’ve seen a couple of large patches on my commute home so I may just forage it this year.

  • I love horseradish, wonderful stuff.

  • Last of my main crop pulled up today. 12 kilos exactly according to our scale.

  • Think my allotment neighbour may be growing a little something for personal use.

  • Where abouts? Asking for a friend

  • Windows finally in. Double glazing is tricked than I thought

  • Bit more bramble bashing, got rid of a couple of trees that were taking up space and shaded out by the almond. Dug over a 3x3m patch and got rid of loads of bramble roots.
Looks like we’ll end up with a bit of a step down from the back but just a gentle slope from there on down. Big pile of crap is getting bigger.
Met a few neighbours, apparently our plot has been vacant 4-5yrs at least.

  • Is that the neighbour's trampoline?

  • Yeah guessing it was chucked over the back fence from the houses.
I think I’ve got a plan for it.

  • I’m sure you could do something productive with that. You could raise it up and have a seating area in the middle and then grow tomatoes up it In summer

  • Plan is to put it up on scaff poles to either grow stuff up or maybe net it and turn it into a fruit cage.
Seating area prob going to remain under those trees. Working on levelling it out by pulling some soil down from by the fence and raising the front edge a touch.

  • Fruit cage is a genius idea

  • Your idea actually sounds better but you could also consider this, especially if you needed to keep the height down

  • I don’t have the legs as far as I know. They’re certainly not attached but possible I’ll find them if they were also dashed over the fence.

  • We've just been donated some more horseradish by an allotment neighbour. I'm sort of looking forward to making some more sauce but I'm tempted to wear swimming goggles when I'm on the blender this time. Ugh!

  • A sinus clearing experience. The lot I just made is. So. Hot.

  • Met a few neighbours, apparently our plot has been vacant 4-5yrs at least.

So surprising given that you always hear demand for allotments is so high, but perhaps people saw it and didn't want to take on the work. It probably took a tree surgeon not to be too daunted. :)

  • Did it - one years work!

  • Lots of progress there, great work.

  • Tell us about your tyres please, what do you use them for?

  • We were waiting 2years on the list. I was clear when I applied I wasn’t afraid of a bit of a challenge ;)
Aside from the digging and the amount of waste I’ve generated I didn’t see it as that big a job to sort it out...

  • Had planned to use them as planters - but didn't like the idea of foodstuffs in degrading rubber, so they are now just holders for the big grey pots you can see on the inside. Could grow flowers in there, but the plan is various herbs as an overflow from them garden.

  • Good effort!

  • Don’t know about elsewhere but tyres are explicitly forbidden at our site apparently as chemicals can leach out over time..
