  • Not sure anyone could pick up a Goldwing.
There was a specific unfaired detuned Vfr400f which was used in rising schools, it had massive crash bars maybe a foot each side with different coloured lights on them that lit in sequence according to your speed. The bars were so wide I doubt it could have fallen over to be picked up.
Some schools in city’s were on top of buildings to add a bit of spice to the emergency stop.

I read in one of the Grey Bike magazines to go up on capacity you had to pass tests in sequence and they got more expensive so most stopped at 400cc.
I despatched a string of Bros400s, CB-1s and CBR 400s, they were all around the same age and mileage as the MOT (Shaken) became stricter with age and eventually involved a partial engine strip.

You can fit a 750cc AfricaTwin engine in a Bros400 if you try

  • There is a method to pick up a wing. Suspect similar to picking up a GS..which is the first thing you learn on a gs off road day.

  • Excellent. Will definitely be in touch.

  • It was a dummy bike that you had to pick up not a real one and certainly not as big as a gold wing. One technique for picking up a Gold Wing or similar is to turn your back to the bike and squat, hold the bike and use your legs and you should be able to lift it.

I learnt to do that riding HD Electra Glides.

  • Thinking of chopping my superduke 990 for something smaller and duel sports. 150kg weight, 60bhp min, big fuel tank+reserves

Can you get anything good for 3k?

    I'd love a 690 enduro rally raid but £££!

  • I can see where you’re going with this idea considering where you are and what madness you’re currently doing. So I’ll just plonk this here just to fan the flames a little.

  • Tenere 700 looks fully sick

  • Mad.

Yeah 990 too big to keep in van all time. So want something smaller and lighter then can have it all the time. Plus I like to go off road now. So yeah, maybe I should just get a 250 or something

  • I reckon this might be right up your new off road fetish.

  • It was this vs the DR650 that I had inner turmoil, before setting my sights on the much lighter and nippier DR350.

  • I’m slightly biased but I love mine - they’re aces. Can do anything off road and fast enough for a street bike. Unburstable.

  • Please stop. I've been watching videos for the last 2 weeks on the big red pig. Was also looking at the Husaberg FS650 but the Honda seems more practical if you're not actually racing it.

  • Also prices are creeping up!

  • They’re winners. Exceedingly charming. Can't seem to post any pics, so you're off the hook on the additional temptation :)

Mine has the HRC kit and I can't imagine wanting anything faster off road. Even the stock ones are quick once uncorked....they're absolute tractors too, if the engine is turning, they'll drive.

All the new stuff from KTM / Husqvarna is better but I wouldn't float that sort of wedge on something I'll throw at the scenery.

  • I wouldn't float that sort of wedge on something I'll throw at the scenery.

That's a statement to live by that. Currently doing some long term work on the SV and same thing ran through my head. Had a chance to buy late plate Daytona 675, but it was...too clean. I'd hesitate to wring it's neck just in case. SV brings me joy, but I know much about it now to know when it begins to be unhappy so don't mind tearing it apart.

  • Yeah spot on mate...doubly so for anything off road. Not only am I considerably more shite as a rider, falling off is an inevitable part of the fun. I choke every time I get a chance to buy something shiny - it's been YEARS now...

  • Yeah I can dig it. There's something to be said about having something you're not afraid to wrangle without fearing for scratching it.
Reckon the sweet spot for bikes now is early to mid 2000's

  • Sept /Oct best time to buy, loads for sale as folk who can't store them bump them along. Don't expect rock bottom prices though, dealers hoover majority of the bikes at this time of year, tidy them up then sell for maximum dollar in march April

  • Preach - that was a cracking vintage for sportsbikes too, if slightly part of the hand grenade era of dirt machines.

All my old nails are ancient. 1994,1996,2000,2001,2005,2005.

Still, 5 out of 6 operational is not bad....

  • Bet I couldn't afford that.

  • Sell you my 990 ha!

  • No idea how much they are in the UK!

All used dirt bikes have got stupidly expensive here in the last few months. I flogged my super tidy 04 RM250 last year for 2100....probably could get over 3 easy now. It's bonkers.

  • Keep trying mate! Not a snowballs chance in hell if I want to make the move to your yonder ways.

@Jung Same here dude, Even the raggiest pile of crap fetches big bucks. Tiger I bought wasn't ideal price but needed transport for two.

I've looked up some dirt bikes and the prices are only moving upwards. KLR's? IF you can find them. RM's? Good luck. Even under powered Ducati scramblers fetch silly money.
