Home fitness

  • Recently I've been struggling to keep my weight in check and the lack of commute caused by lockdown is really not helping. I don't much fancy the gym in the middle of a global pandemic so I'm looking at home workouts.

What's the deal with the courses like Power 90, I've read some happy testimonials but buying a pack of DVDs feels so 2002.

Does anyone have any experience with these 30 day workout plans?
Are there some online streaming equivalents to the dvd ones?
I've done some googling but are there any good resources on this to make my own workout plans?

  • Anything by Joe Wicks is really good, fun and generally free on YouTube

  • I can't watch Joe Wicks, not since he used to advertise a bunch of recipe videos on Facebook and never washed his hands after touching raw chicken then other ingredients.

  • recipe videos on Facebook and never washed his hands after touching raw chicken then other ingredients

That sounds like a weight loss plan

  • did you break your kickr?

  • i need to something similar for similar reasons. fatty fat fat fat.

  • How much home training equipment do you have?

You can get a fantastic home workout with a chinup bar, kettlebell/s.

  • You mean Elite Direto X. No it still works and I intend on working in some cycling workouts to whatever plan I end up doing. But it's soul crushing and I can't use it more than a couple of times a week.

  • I have been using an old tacx vortex turbo and trainer road. Lost 1.5 stone and ftp has gone up significantly in the lockdown period.

It has also enabled me to binge watch Netflix too.

Have been doing 5 trainer road workouts per week and 45 mins to two hours of yoga daily.

  • I do 20 minutes of sprint intervals on my turbo and yoga/general dancing about on other days. I usually walk 6 miles a day so lockdown has taken its toll on my midriff. Have reduced my portions too which has helped.

I can't go on the turbo for long periods, it's too boring. Short, high intensity bursts work better for me.

  • I can't do the turbo 5 days a week, mentally I just can't.

  • I started out just doing three sessions a week and it escalated from there. It’s actually been better than expected, setting goals and achieving them has been rewarding. Apart from the period when TrainerRoad tamp test gave me too high an ftp and I just couldn’t actually complete the workouts, but have lowered it a bit and am back to enjoying the sense of accomplishment whilst also watching tv or listening to vintage DJ mixes.

Also I must have a high boredom threshold - would explain why I am still on Lfgss.

  • I’ve bought some dumbbells this morning and plan to ease myself back into lifting.

The 20kg box felt so fucking heavy. Nestling in mind I could curl 20kg at one point

  • Just go out and hit the streets on your bike a couple of times a week. Start just riding around some places you’ve never been to before, then start stretching it out a bit further as you get fitter/stronger/more confident. If you can regularly do 1.5 hours you’ll be spending a good amount of time a week in the fat burning zone and you should shed the weight fairly effectively.

Obvs keep an eye on what’s going in too. Booze, crisps, biscuits, chocolate etc etc aren’t going to help.

You’d have been spending that time on your bike commuting anyway, so why not make time for it again but in a more leisurely way.

  • I don’t think ‘get out on the bike more’ is quite the advice required, considering it’s about home fitness....

Also it normally takes me at least 30 minutes to prepare to go out for a ride, and 30 minutes to sort myself out after, so not so time efficient.

  • I have this British Army Fitness Guide book that has about 36 weeks of daily exercise plans. All body weight movements and progressive over time. Can all be done in a normal sized living room. It incorporates a lot of running but you could sub turbo for that instead. I've found it a nice way to maintain/improve fitness.

  • I landed up getting some rings to hang from a chin up bar, between the rings and a kettlebell I seem to keep myself more amused than I used to at the gym

  • Oh interesting, they've got an app too.

  • In case anyone cares, my conclusion to this has been to buy the FB30 plan from Fitness Blender cos it was like £3 and all their videos are free on youtube so I can follow the same plan again later easily. I'm doing this first month just bodyweight or very light dumbbells and I'll add more weight over time. I'm going be adding in some evening turbo sessions but I think just steady riding rather than intervals.

  • Morning turbo!
FWIW- for me I have a (c.) half hour rule.
If I say I'm going to do some form of exercise, I then set a timer for 25 minutes, and within that time I have to have started the exercise.
Mentally if I reach the half hour, nothing happens and I find an excuse to push it back and back.
That and writing everything that goes in, and summing up the training in some way- to give even more accountability just about manages my laziness predilection.

  • Dude, I’m doing the same. Start Monday.
