• oh that one ! yes... mine has a scott branded kinesis with a shitty fsa headset, i just bought new bearings because previous user put some 45 degrees into 36 cups and races... it will do

  • So Ive realised that the Red AXS crank arms only here weigh 340g
    https://r2-bike.com/SRAM-RED-eTap-AXS-DUB-Crankarms-Carbon-Road-Exogram-8-bolt-Interface

But the quarq crank arms here also weigh 340g
    https://r2-bike.com/SRAM-Quarq-DUB-Road-Crank-for-DUB-Power-Meter-Spider-1750-mm

But the quarq can be bought arms only for £180-£200
    https://www.bikeinn.com/bike/sram-quarq-d1-dub-crank-arm/137680631/p?utm_source=google_products&utm_medium=merchant&id_producte=11353277&country=uk&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIgMmuv7rA6wIV1-vtCh3QbgAmEAQYAiABEgLpivD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Trying to find info on whether they are the same but just different branding?

Edit - I'm not sure if the quarq arms could be used with say a red axs set of rings or spider. I think they should since the arms use the 8-bolt system

  • These are the forks. I used the dremmel to give a quick test polish on the stripped bits andbthe fillet brazing. The brazing polishes up to a very high shine. Im stripping the rest of the paint off right now.

  • This is what I've got for the inbred so far. A right mash up... The forks are too short bit ill go with them for now.
Theres a choice of bars to run, 50cm flared drops, big dutch shopper sweep back or a choice of mtb flats narrow or wide.
Have ugly white stans rims but need a rear hub to build up the rear.
Infact a cheap rear hub and headset is all i need really to get it rideable

  • looks good ! funn-ily enough my pomp is in a very similar state.

i will be stuck for a while as i have no ability to build wheels myself

  • no ability to build wheels myself

    Same here.

I have a 21 year old nephew whos a little bmx punk, he builds his own bmx wheels and does it for all his friends. But for some reason I dont trust him to build a big wheel.

What are those bars and stem?

  • no idea ! one of the freebies (surly hubs too) i found for the build... the stem is for 25.4mm bars has an internal clamp mechanism.
i like it so far but i might go for gravel bars such as the funns. also might go for disc forks. but it is essentially a lock-up bike so everything visible will stay (has to) low-key. the inly thing is i'd like to set-up the wheels tubeless for a bit of performance off-road

  • Yeah similar plans here ssmtb-sscx-dadbike-commuter as cheaply as possible but still ok to ride.
If I keep the inbred frame though I'll probably need some cheap chinese suspension corrected forks. The head tube angle on these inbreds was pretty steep as it is without a fork thats too short.

Paint has came off the surly forks very well now so the polishing begins

  • you heard it here first :
    #tracklommuter

yeah polished surly fork will pop out ! but geometry will change for sure

  • #tracklommuter

    Its real.

Yeah if forks turn out well then defo building a bike round them...

  • Waiting for crank set for tarmac to arrive. So finally got round to getting my dh bike back up and running.
Got a new front triangle at crash replacement price from Propain even though I bought the bike second hand so that's was nice of them. Have had it since before lock down and and only now getting round to swapping it over.

Nice bits of note going - EXT racing shox ARMA rear shock going on. Pretty boutique Italian brand with a history in wrc.

The purple ano chain device is something quite rare that took a while to find. By a small independent German brand called BPP. Really rare to see these outside of Germany, small company producing nice cnc bits. Company no longer trading sadly. Its just a chain device, but it looks very nice.

  • Looks awesome though I have no idea about anything about mountain bikes...

What crankset did you go for?

  • Uch I ended up going with a sram red crankset... £150 offer accepted brand new unused on ebay so can't complain.
I really wanted something a bit different for the cranks but I was maybe being a bit picky.
Atleast groupset is matchy matchy. The etap front mech had clearance issues with my hollowgrams.
You would hope etap mech and red cranks mate up without issue...

  • no ability to build wheels myself

    Same here.

I’m trying to do more wheel building so if you need something building, gimme a shout ;)

  • You are the 5th forum owner of this frame (that I know of)

    It's lived

  • well that's good, the plan now is about going disc brake only at the front

However, just had a look at your sale thread, so it must be you that put 45 bearings in 36 cups ? good skills !

  • May well take you up on that because this happened last week...

I live 10 mins away from big Al at wheelcraft. He built these wheels up. But he did say on the Wednesday that they would be ready for the weekend. It actually took 5 weeks...

  • The wheels?

I sold it with a set of Bontrager wheels, but never touched the bearings myself...

  • the headset bearings that you mentionned

  • That was seabass :D

  • really ? sad

  • Final pieces of the puzzle arrived today for the Tarmac.
Red bb30 crankset brand new for £150 on ebay.

I've went with a 3t overdrive cassette. This is an 11 speed 9-32 cassette but it fits an xdr driver.
I didn't want to spend £120 odd quid on a shimano free hub so the 3t cassette lets me keep the xdr driver on the zipp wheels.
Theres a potentially annoying jump from 9t to 11t but its fairly hilly riding where I live so the smoother jumps at the other end should work well for me.

Can start getting the bike built tomorrow evening but still looking for some nice 44cm aero bars to finish it off

  • 52x9, strong.

Also had a double take, the packaging for the crank made the small ring look knackered.

  • 52x9, strong

Yes, I regularly spin out at 45mph on flat roads...

Ha, I'm kinda taking a step back here. For years I rode 53-39 not because I think I'm solid or anything but its just happened be what I got and stuck with it. Was only a couple years ago I moved to compact and 32t cassette - was a revelation!

52-36 was the only option on Red I could find cheap enoughon ebay. 110bcd so will surely be going back to compact eventually.

If anyone happens to want to swap these rings for a 50-34 set pm me!

  • Hah, I’m planning on putting a 54t single ring with an 11-25 cassette on the Principia.

I tell myself I can grind myself up most things where I live on a 50-18, so a 54-25 should be fine...
