It is just a normal golf, nothing special.
EDIT found out about it via gf dad who is member of a club and mentioned my rebuilding a smart car.
I'd be wary of rust, it seems like the mk3 was more susceptible than the Mk2. It probably wont feel that special to drive in the end either as it's not that old.
I'd do it if the miles were low and it was a 3 door in a nice colour.
