I'm really happy with my Honda Civic, it does everything I need of it with aplomb.
I know it's not exciting in any way, but I could not drive a Jazz. I just see them and think of this.

We barely squeezed four lightweight road bikes, wheels off, into the back of a similar pickup (Mitsubishi IIRC).
I bet a Jazz has similar load space.

Old French cars do seem to be in better nick in France , but I love panda . Second hand prices always seem toppy though

You might be better off with something bigger if you're wanting to fit 4 people and 4 bikes comfortably for long trips. Something like a crew van might be ideal, 2 rows of 3 seats each, a bulk head then a large storage area in the back for bikes and luggage. Something like a mwb Transit, Crafter or Sprinter.

Yeah, some cars are definitely more expensive there.
On the other hand once the runabout is obtained, there are things down there like rust free 2-door Range Rover classics, and Citroen BXs just waiting for a mechanically minded owner with a nice new workshop to fix them up in. -

Is there a guest annex?

Been offered an early MK3 golf that has been stored in a basement garage for 30 years. It is a freebie on the understanding I put the car back on the road.
Supposed to be in good nick, would you accept the challenge? Would it be different if it was a MK2 golf? Not a GTi or anything special.

Have you seen it ?
What’s to lose ? -

A LWB T5/6 Kombi looks good, but they’re strong money and limited to 60. I wonder if there is such a thing as a LWB Caravelle? The reason I like the look of the Caravelle is that they are usually specified like a car, so aircon, cruise etc.

What’s to lose ?
Money, time, sanity?

Absolutely, yes get it.
I loved mine was only the 8V but was a GTI had a MK1 and a MK4 and this was easily my favorite to drive, power steering for the win!
Rust killed it off only paid £250 for it mind with 1 previous owner. Found pics, check the interior!
Mind you I did sell it for 80 quid to a guy who was going to use it for banger racing.

Very nice interior.
This car was a guys wife car and she dief 30 years ago and now decided to let it go.
It is just a normal golf, nothing special.
EDIT found out about it via gf dad who is member of a club and mentioned my rebuilding a smart car.

This is more of a un-appreciation post. Have driven our mitsubishi outlander phev for 6 months now and it is boring af. Good lease deal with lots of annual miles allowed, the only available phev I could find with a towbar etc but so boring, and makes annoying beeps all the time. Also comes with a completely useless phone app to set heater/air con schedules which doesn't work at all. The thing has its own wifi that you can't connect to from more than 10 metres and certainly not if you're inside the house. Like going back 10 years in time compared to our old volvo which could be easily accessed remotely from anywhere. Apparently mitsubishi are pulling their cock out of Europe next year so no need to think about getting another one when this lease runs out in 18 months. Really hope there are more options by then.

would you accept the challenge?
Sure, if I had the time and space. Sounds like fun!

Don't you love it when they have a bit of a story to go with, Imagine how he would feel to see it back on the road. I say go for it.

That's reasonable! For work I drive a few 10 year old VW Crafters and they're actually surprisingly comfortable, I can sit in one all day and not really mind, I'm sure a more modern one with all the mod cons would be a fairly pleasant place to be. The added benefit of a "proper" van with a divider between the passenger area and the luggage/bike area would be improved security. Chuck a decent dead lock or two on the back doors and you don't have to worry about someone breaking a window and being able to take off with all of your bikes.

My new van is pretty ace. I've now dumped the last two rows of seats, so it accommodates 5 and can fit 2 motorbikes and a metric shit ton of stuff in the back still. Cruised over the Grapevine at 80 last sunday without breaking sweat. (The grapevine is the steep long climb out of LA on the 5 freeway, a notorious vehicle killer.)

so aircon, cruise
Surprised all T6's don't come with those. Pretty sure the rental Transit I used a few years ago had cruise control. Definitely had aircon. VW are usually better than other German cars for giving some items as standard.
LWB Caravelle
Given how much you love a project, what about making and one and re-registering it?

Limited to 60?

We’ve been borrowing an outlander phev over the summer, it has the worst satnav I’ve ever tried to use. Quite like the dashboard otherwise but driving it is bizarre. The steering feels like it’s connected with rubber bands that pull it back to the centre and all the power is in about the first mm of pedal travel so it’s annoying to move smoothly at low speed.

Back when I was looking in to converting a T5 in to a camper, the bigger issue seemed to be the lack of sound insulation on the van builds compared to the people carrier and camper builds.

Vans are (believe it or not, given how fast they are driven) subject to a limit of 50 on A/B roads and 60 on motorways.
I think the bikes would be less secure due to the clear glass if you leave the van parked up anywhere? and bit more risky getting changed in the back.
I've had a T5 for the last 8 years, it sounds like you need van with a second row of seats and side window installed as well as insulation/ lining - makes a big difference. Check you can get the bikes in lengthwise (might be worth looking at LWB) and not sure how they would fit across the width.
