• Ah, I like the idea of the combi SA and block but I’d need two shifters which could work as the Cyclo I have in the post is band on and the TT has a brazed fitting also? And I think I’ve seen a rear hub brake wheel with a SA and a sprocket on eBay. Hmm.

  • And the chainset I’m bidding on has a rear inner 46 ring, and if then combined with jeff80’s block at 20 with the SA makes it all pretty close to what you’re suggesting?

  • Surely the inner ring on a tandem takes the drive from the front, so it has no effect on the
    gearing.

You can't use Jeff80's block with a Sturmey without serious engineering work - most Sturmeys have a 3 spline fitting for the sprocket, not a thread.

I should make it clear I've never used combination gearing on a tandem, and I'm not absolutely certain whether a standard Sturmey spindle will stand up to the extra weight of a tandem.

I do have a contact who has a longstanding passion for old tandems, and who might be prepared to help. I can ask if you want - where abouts are you based?

  • Oops, my mistake on the chain ring drives.
I think I’ll try and source a hub brake wheel first and see what I need from there.
The bike came with a 3spd SA with a ‘63 date stamp and the rear chainstay bridge is drilled (for a mudguard fitting) so I could technically fit a caliper brake... but I’d rather not.
And on your offer, would be glad of any advice and where also to try and hunt for rods and adjusters for the rear hub.
    Am over near Reading.

  • I use a Cyclo adapter on an SA AW hub on my Paris tandem and it works pretty well. As you can see in my picture, I have a large cog and a small one and the Cyclo Standard deraileur is able to change between them ok.

The main problem, for me, is that I couldn't get long enough cables, so the stoker has to change the Cyclo deraileur and I change the SA hub from the front.

  • I’m sat reading all this and realising I’m hopelessly out of my depth lol
I think I’m going to end up busking through the whole process and will end up with a literal shed load of parts that will never have been designed to get anywhere near one another.
However, it’s so much more interesting than work so bring it on.

  • Lovely tandem by the by :)

  • @crossedthread has your stay got the mounting for that Cyclo derailleur? If not, I think you want a Benelux one instead, which mounts over the axle like normal. I don't know if you can get bolt on mounts for the stays.

  • Er, shit. Let me check now.

  • It’s got this bit. Is that good?

I’m going to guess it’s not.

  • Isn't that one with a clamp on for the chainstay?

  • The brazing on the left hand chainstay is for the torque arm of a rear hub brake, so yes it's good if you've got the right hub that fits it.

I can confirm that Cyclo rear mechs can be mounted on a bolt on bracket - that's how mine is fitted (see some way back in this thread).

  • I’m sat reading all this and realising I’m hopelessly out of my depth lol

Given time, you'll learn how to swim.

The first thing you need to do is decide what this tandem will be used for - is it to be touring, time trialling or just a museum piece ?

  • Lol.. you had me fooled.

  • Going to try and source a clamp by the looks then :)
It’s going to do light road duties I suspect, allotment trips and the like.

  • Bit of tidying up and tinfoiling, original (I think?) stem and Captain’s seatpost, both of which had been sprayed silver, which I guess helped arrest worse pitting.
Have filed the drilled badge holes with brass rivets and filed them smooth so hoping the paint will help with that bodge...
