  • This is the oldest surviing pair of socks in the world (or maybe Dr Zoidberg's slippers). They were made about 400 AD. Note that they were specifically designed to be worn under sandals. The ancient romans and the ancient Greeks wore socks with their sandals. I'm curious to know when it started to be considered a fashion crime. From what I have read, socks and sandals seems to have largely been the norm until the 1960s or so.

I reckon its like one of these rules such as spending several months salary on an engagement ring (invented by De Beers). Somebody influential said that sandals and socks are unfashionable once and the whole world has taken it to heart. Does it really look that bad? Looks comfortable to me!

  • The Japanese have socks like that for their slippers.

You could be right the backlash is manufactured by some fashion body, I'm not sure.

Well they are now worn by "influencers" so we may see them back soon.

Just reading about how in Russia, India and various other countries it is considered poor taste to show your feet so it is considered polite to wear socks and sandals. Other countries, like the Czech Republic and Germany it seems to be a generational rebellion thing. I.e its what the olds do so the young rebelled. I find stuff like this fascinating.
