Personally I'd go for ratchet straps, having had problems with cam buckles slipping when fastening motorbikes to a trailer. I've also used ratchet straps for other things, such as a web clamp when repairing furniture.
Having said that, a ratchet system can cause damage if you over tighten it - I was surprised how easy it was to bend the boot floor of a Terrano...
I need to pick up some floorboards and other misc timber from the yard a couple of KMs down the road.
Is there any reason to get ratchet straps over cam buckle tie downs for the roofrack? I've always used rope in the past but that's been misplaced and figured some sort of webbing option would be less hassle...
