Aw man, I’ve got a bit of a dog crush on Nikko!
He’s looking big - you know how heavy he is now?
-
• #1653
Cheers man!
I think he weighs around 9 kg’s? -
• #1654
He looks so much bigger than Odie! Odie is 8.5kg since his last vet visit the other day. Maybe it’s the fur. Also Odies ears havn’t stuck up yet, bless him :-)

Went to meet some miniature xolos, OH didn't like them at all and I wasn't as enamoured in the flesh... Maybe a standard would be a different proposition but would also be harder to train, tough one... Back to the drawing board!

We’ve been hesitant letting Odie off the lead - it can be hard to get his attention when he’s distracted, not helped by his disinterest in yummy treats. His recall’s been getting better and better though and we’ve been building up our courage with a 10m lead. This morning was my first go with him off lead and he was the goodest of boys! Even came to me sharpish when I called him away from a dog I spotted was on a lead (conjunctivitis apparently). Have to say - it was a great feeling strolling through the field with doggo freely mucking around in my vicinity.
Edit: my stupid phone can’t handle uploading gifs properly it seems

Stop shopping, start adopting.

If we could find a medium sized hypoallergenic dog in the Brisbane area, we would... No dice...
Ideally one that's young enough to be trained as an assistance dog... Even tougher call...

No love for a Schnauzer?

If there are as many COVID puppies in Oz as there are here, shouldn't be too long before a lot of them are given up for adoption.
Schnauzers are great, very bright dogs.

Oh my god, what an absolute babe! What is he?
We've been considering a mini Aussie Sheep Dog as soon as we decamp to a smaller town but we have two cats so we're not sure if they'll get along. We want something active but not too big. Not much to ask!

Treats don't always work, as you are finding out, but as long as you are more interesting than that other thing you'll be onto a winner. If he's a distance from you a squeaky toy or your squeaky voice might catch his attention. If he looks your way squat down spread your arms and call him to you. Make a massive fuss of him and that might be his "treat". Repetition, repetition etc. A nice high-pitched voice and boisterous, FUN, praise makes you and yours good to be with. Try it in a confined space or on a looong lead first until you can get him approaching consistent. He'll let you down sometimes but remember he speaks a different language to you so tone is more important. Resist just calling his name because he might not know why you are saying his name. If it's "Odie, come!" it's the come bit you want to emphasise. I hope you get there with him because walking a dog off lead and knowing he'll behave is brilliant.

Well the weight is a guess based on the last one my GF took and time passed since but as you say, a lot of fluff!
He look ridicoulus when he’s soaked.. -

Pretty much all of this, I make a habit of hunching down and calling him in randomly for a cuddle, treat or play, and some times none. He won’t respond 100% but it works enough of the times considering he’s a pup if that make sense..

I met a very sweet poodle/cocker spaniel cross called Flori tonight. She and a mate of hers were hilarious--a case of 'you had to be there', as the description can't get it across. The mate was much faster at chasing balls and always brought them back to her and gave them to her, and she in turn then took them to people.

If we wanted a cattle dog, a greyhound or a staffie we'd be absolutely fine, we could get one tomorrow... Anything else, not so much...

This is the problem we had a few months ago, we desperately wanted a rescue dog but there was only 3 dogs within a 5hr drive of our house and they were all huntaway cattle dogs and we don't have the space

What age is he? Bare in mind their recall goes to sh*t at 7-8 months before they calm down. In fact they quite often go bonkers at that age for a few months.
Ours is currently being a little git about coming back on the lead so doing a lot of retraining with him. He'll come when called and never runs off completely but if he's in that mood he just won't let you get hold of him.
He's just had two weeks of having the run of a Northumbrian beach though so he's probably sulking at being back in SE London.
Just had to share this.. Nikko’s first packrafting trip. Went super well..
