  • I agree with you Arducius- if we leave Switzerland whilst it is exempt then we have not been in a non-exempt country.

Otherwise it makes a nonsense of all those people who rushed home from France- they’d been in France during the last 14 days, but they made it home before it’s status changed so didn’t have to isolate.

  • I believe that we are travelling from an exempt country (Switzerland) to an exempt country (Germany), then transmitting through a non-exempt country (France) in a way that is approved in the FCO advice:

  • I can find nothing about re-classification of a country affecting isolation requirements after one has left, and as I said earlier if that were the case then everyone who got back from France “in the knick of time” would have had to isolate, as they’d been somewhere that is now on the list within the last 14 days.

  • I think the first sentence here is key:

  • It's perfectly simple. If you're not getting your hair cut, you don't have to move your brother's clothes down to the lower peg. You simply collect his note before lunch, after you've done your scripture prep, when you've written your letter home, before rest, move your own clothes onto the lower peg, greet the visitors, and report to Mr. Viney that you've had your chit signed.

That was funnier when it was satire instead of the basis for most Govt policies.

    Good luck and safe travels.

  • If you can’t get enough petrol in the car in Suisse to get to Calais you have to quarantine; and they will ask whether you have stopped. To get around that drive to Aachen and fill up there which will get you to Calais. Wear a mask any time you leave the car in Germany.

  • Not true if you pay at the fuel pump (ie don't mix with other people)...

  • Stop gaming it.
You've been away. You've visited different places. You should, I would suggest, quarantine yourself.

If Switzerland is going on to a "naughty" list. It means the infection levels have been on the rise. I mean. Don't just take my word for it:
    https://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/covid-19_coronavirus--the-situation-in-switzerland/45592192

(much like the UK, cases are rising)

Now. You could try and drill down and find out if your particular Canton is affected. And then you could say to yourself "well, I think we probably were ok".
    But if you see this:

Anyone travelling from Switzerland to Scotland on or after 4am on
August 22 will need to self-isolate for 14 days.

You'd probably think,"hmm. if Scotland is on the self isolate list for entry to Switzerland, I wouldn't be surprised if the whole of the UK goes on soon". Which should make you think "I'll probably be on the self quarantine list for the reverse journey"

Now, whether you think "I could do xyz and then avoid the quarantine by driving here and stopping there" and don't think "this all sounds a bit Dom Cummings" then I think perhaps you need to have a word with yourself.

You've been "ABROAD". You've gone to somewhere there has been a steady increase in the number (overall) of cases (yes, you're right, we can't tell how nasty the case was only if it was a case or not). You're going to drive to another country to avoid stopping/transit rule so that you can avoid self quarantine when you get back to a country that will probably be requiring self quarantine from the country you stayed in. And this country you travelled from will reciprocate this quarantine arrangement.

  • To get back to a country with a higher infection rate than anywhere I’ve been.

  • Why shouldn't you quarantine?
    Why can't you?

  • I probably will, pretty much- but I’d like to be able to go running in the morning, and ride my bike at the weekend. Both activities that I do on my own, I’d point out.

  • I think that's sensible, I understand there's ways to avoid quarantine - but that doesn't seem to be the right thing to do.

I think (though I'm sure the HPTs out there might suggest otherwise) that you might be able to get away with exercise. Though looking here:
    https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-how-to-self-isolate-when-you-travel-to-the-uk/coronavirus-covid-19-how-to-self-isolate-when-you-travel-to-the-uk#how-to-self-isolate-in-your-accommodation

In England, you must only exercise within your home or garden. You cannot leave your home to walk your dog. You will need to ask friends or relatives to help you with this.

    suggests no.

  • I’ve read the guidance, and I take your point that I’m looking at obeying the letter rather than the spirit of the law. I’d balance that against staying in a tiny Swiss village where I’ve been mountain biking on my own for two weeks, and I’ll book a C19 test for when I get home.

  • One other factor to consider, is that this conversation is entirely public and indexed by Google.

It is not just your own behavior that you must examine, but how this conversation serves to influence other, unknown and possibly less scrupulous readers.

  • Pretty glad we missed the Austria quarantine requirement. They've had a doubling of infection rate in Vienna (probably as a result of the huge Mozart centennary festival they hosted a few weeks ago) but the region we were in has a case load of about 20% that of the UK. I know that its hard to put in quarantine requirements by region of a country but I sure feel sorry for the mountain tourist businesses in Tirol who are losing bookings hand over fist right now despite having one of the lowest Covid rates in Europe.

  • I’ll book a C19 test for when I get home

Slightly different issue but should you? Apparently we 'ran out of tests' the other day. I don't think you are eligible for an NHS test.

  • Unscrupulous readers of LFGSS?
    That's just not cricket.

  • There's private capacity isn't there?

  • I can see this. It's annoying and frustrating and particularly galling when it appears if you're an MP or related to one, you might be able to do what you want when you want and it doesn't matter.

  • I thought not as people like BUPA were only offering antibody and not antigen tests but I've now found someone that will do an antigen test. Eg https://www.doctorcall.co.uk/products/coronavirus-covid-19-pcr-swab-home-test-kit/ncov for a home test for £120

  • Before spreading (hahahahahaha) this, have you checked the .gov website?
    https://www.gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test

  • I did and I can't see 'have returned from abroad and have no symptoms' in the list.

  • if your local council asks you to get a test

You might/can call your council and see what they say....

  • I'm with Neil. If he leaves before the rules change and drives through France not stopping, there's no reason to fully quarantine. Having been away I would keep aware (stay alert...) of my health and certainly minimise interactions over the next 2 weeks, but going for a run/ride is fine IMO. I wouldn't get a test unless I showed symptoms.

  • Isn’t the drive back just a long eye test?
