Not the cheapest but there's the Condor Bivio we were talking about a while back in this thread. Very similar to classic road geo but can take 42c tyres of 650b wheels. https://www.condorcycles.com/collections/cyclo-cross-bikes/products/condor-bivio-gravel-thru-axle-frameset

Bombtrack Audax might be an option?

That's lovely, hadn't seen those before. Pretty spenny though. Other suggestions definitely worth considering too, although the Rondo, while probably a great bike to ride, is just SO ugly.
I guess in the end I'm really interested in cruising/posing about with mates on all sorts of roads on something that looks and feels nice, and at some point on most rides going fast because it's fun (I think that's what #UKgravel is).

I know you want a frameset only, but if you ride a 56cm, get this https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/339045/#comment15481405

Ooh that's a tempting deal. Has anyone tried 650b to get slightly wider tyres on the Mason Definition? Even something like a 42-44mm 650b gives you a bit more capability. (And, as I understand it, a similar total diameter to 700x25c).

I've got 50mm on mine right now:

I also have these tyres and they come up 42mm on my 18-19mm internal rims, so yeah, plenty of room.

Resolution (and presumably also the Def) have 33mm clearance. I've run 35mm but only in the dry.

700x42 definitely doesn't fit. I have one in the front on the turbo setup right now. Pretty sure my 650Bx47mm won't fit on the Resolution either.

Chainline with xt BB,zee cranks and deore 10spd 11-42 is erm? NUTS ?
-
• #12470
Cheers, that's useful. 650bx42ish? Aware that this could put the BB quite low and doesn't offer much over 700x35. Depends where the crimps etc are I suppose. I know I posted in the grav thread but this will be mainly a road bike - I'll have to have a think about it.

I just had to carry a couple of bikes out of a quagmire after mud jammed both bikes front and rear so I may not risk 50mm but a little smaller could work.

It will work, whether you’re happy with the crank pushing your foot out is another matter.

It's more the cross chain from front to lowest gear.

Hard for me to test. I could swap wheels and let air out/squeeze to 42mm to get a rough idea. Maybe tomorrow when it's getting taken off the turbo.

Take a look at the All City Zig Zag.
Essentially a road bike but with clearance for 35c tyres can handle the odd light excursion off tarmac too.
