Treats don't always work, as you are finding out, but as long as you are more interesting than that other thing you'll be onto a winner. If he's a distance from you a squeaky toy or your squeaky voice might catch his attention. If he looks your way squat down spread your arms and call him to you. Make a massive fuss of him and that might be his "treat". Repetition, repetition etc. A nice high-pitched voice and boisterous, FUN, praise makes you and yours good to be with. Try it in a confined space or on a looong lead first until you can get him approaching consistent. He'll let you down sometimes but remember he speaks a different language to you so tone is more important. Resist just calling his name because he might not know why you are saying his name. If it's "Odie, come!" it's the come bit you want to emphasise. I hope you get there with him because walking a dog off lead and knowing he'll behave is brilliant.

What age is he? Bare in mind their recall goes to sh*t at 7-8 months before they calm down. In fact they quite often go bonkers at that age for a few months.
Ours is currently being a little git about coming back on the lead so doing a lot of retraining with him. He'll come when called and never runs off completely but if he's in that mood he just won't let you get hold of him.
He's just had two weeks of having the run of a Northumbrian beach though so he's probably sulking at being back in SE London.
We’ve been hesitant letting Odie off the lead - it can be hard to get his attention when he’s distracted, not helped by his disinterest in yummy treats. His recall’s been getting better and better though and we’ve been building up our courage with a 10m lead. This morning was my first go with him off lead and he was the goodest of boys! Even came to me sharpish when I called him away from a dog I spotted was on a lead (conjunctivitis apparently). Have to say - it was a great feeling strolling through the field with doggo freely mucking around in my vicinity.
Edit: my stupid phone can’t handle uploading gifs properly it seems
