The rims are 28h H+son, laced to Ambrosio hubs. I don't know the exact model, I got them from @johnnettles2 on here.

@greeno thanks for the tips, I'll give that a try over the weekend. We never have to wait long for direct sunlight to disappear, and I'm thinking a rust colour background would look good :)

amazingly @fax_yourself is still putting up with me and today we (he) got round to angle grinding my stuck crank off and summoned some hulk like strength to get the BB out.

some beat 7710's and a trip to a local gregs wall, here we have it, a paint by numbers internet bike i'll ride once a week and be scared to lock up outside aldi.

Clearance issues with the current project... 700x23 is too tight and a 650b doesn't look right either, the canti mounts are too high for the rim. Do we think I need a 27" rim?

No, 27" is another 4mm radius compared with 700C

I wondered about that, since the bolts look very Mafac Racer, but it would need very small rims, I don't think even 559 (the smallest of the 26" varieties) would work.

Pure joy, 26" to 650B conversion, columbus max or with custom SL fork.

New prime carbon bars, they have a weird concave section at the bend that feels really nice in the hand.
I think the turbo cotton tyres are on their way out, London roads have not been too kind to them

I assume it worked in a past life with some combination of rim and brake, it's just not obvious what that was.

Question:

I have a threaded 1 inch fork and a threaded headset.

The steerer, however, is wayy too long.

Can i simply replace the threaded headset by a threadless one and use the fork with an ahead stem?

If not, how do i cut a new thread in the steerer once I have cut it to my needs?

Yes, if it's long enough. Measure twice, cut once. You'll want somewhere in the vicinity of 70mm of plain steerer over the length of the head tube of whatever frame you're inserting it into.

You can extend the thread (do it before cutting) with a 1"×24TPI BSC die, which a good bike shop will have. You probably don't want to buy one yourself 🙂
