  • What’s the deal with San Martin and Steeldive? I hear about them everywhere, only good things too. Anyone’s got one?

  • Hefty price increase coming I’ve heard and a new bracelet for the speedy pro moon, which would be nice.

  • Omega are already over priced

  • Speedmaster Tintin and current no-date Sub are going for roughly the same money on Chrono24.

  • Strongly disagree.

  • Haven’t had this on rubber for a long time.

  • I’ve never got the point about certain brands being overpriced, surely the market dictates that? If Omega were overpriced, people would not buy? Or is it about the perceived quality vs actual quality?

  • There’s all sorts of funky marketing tactics going back decades. Sometimes I think Rolex is more of a marketing company that makes watches. I do wonder how much of it is within the brands’ control, how much they are responding to it and how much is a happy accident.

Just checked my Euromillions and unfortunately I can’t now justify applying for the price of this :(

  • I get the marketing point to some degree, but the counterpoint to that is that I have spent the last 20 years of my life analysing the impact marketing has on brands, admittedly not on watches, but in pretty much any other brand in the world. And one thing that is universally true is that marketing only gets you so far, if you don’t have the product, aftercare, pricing and distribution then in the long run you have no chance.

  • Mercedes spend hundreds of millions in F1, but don’t make the subframe for my 13 year old car. I like Lewis Hamilton, but I won’t buy another Mercedes.

  • Yeah but realistically were you going to rock up and buy an E63s on a PCP? Every other car I see is an A-Class so they're doing something right.

Do Rolex really do all that much marketing these days anyway? They've got everyone else doing that for them.

  • There were Rolex tv ads on sky sports last night with a tagline that basically boiled down to "we will never stop sponsoring golf"

  • The A-Class, I agree, must have a fantastic finance deal as they’re a) shit and b) everywhere. A car that people who don’t know anything about cars recommends to their mates.

And yes, I’d have bought a C63, from 2014, as that’s the last model year (I think) with the 6.2 litre V8, but with that said I’d use the local Mercedes dealer for servicing (if they weren’t total cunts, Hi Bromley Mercedes!), and parts have to come from Mercedes.

    I think I’ll try to find a V10 M5 Touring next, or a van.

  • Marketing isn't just adverts on TV, the end goal is to drive people to want to buy your product. Even limiting supply to keep demand up is part of it (Rolex). In my opinion Omega are already on the top end of rrp for comparable watches and they're not particularly hard to get hold of, they rely on the whole "first watch on the moon" thing way too much and if they keep pumping out special editions while increasing prices they're going to kill their desirability.

Also the speedy professional doesn't even have sapphire.

  • Because having sapphire would stop it being the watch that it is. You’re complaining that a for e.g. dive mask isn’t made of sapphire glass.

  • That was a tongue in cheek complaint cos I've made it a couple times here before and it always gets a response. Y'all are just simps for Omega.

  • I can see myself buying an Omega, I cannot imagine a world where I would buy a Rolex.
    (Tudor perhaps)

Probably due to their main selling point (perceived image) which I don't give a shit about.

Happy for you to like Rolex, but not for me

  • Odd morning, thought I had jumped into the car appreciation thread!

  • The rumour is that omega are about to adopt a similar scarcity model to rolex and put the prices up. I hope it’s not true, I like the fact you can buy a speedy moon watch on the high street.

You can get a speedy pro sapphire sandwich if you don’t care about the moon stuff.

  • Wearing mine today. It's expensive at £4k but also great that you can get one next day. Attainable luxury.

Ditto, there’s claim that Omega’s movement are on par if not better than Rolex.

  • Would be great news for some more esoteric brands if Omega significantly increases their prices.

I want a Rolex. I’d like an Omega. But I won’t get one until I’ve got a Rolex. Which will take forever.

  • Is it true that 2nd hand prices haven't been increasing by much on the moonwatch since the price started to creep up?

Edit: a quick check of eBay shows boxed moon watches selling for between £2,800 and £3,300. How much does a new moonwatch cost nowadays?
