For basic wall shelves we got Tomado Libro as an alternative to string. They do white ladders with solid wood (or metal shelves). 70x70cm spacing x 20cm deep x 18mm thick shelf. Get them on Amazon for 80 squid.
Or I spotted Hema do them for £40 with metal shelves (and £25 for an add-on) and you could cut & rout some oak planks or whatever to fit?
I agree with you and like them as an alternative.
Edit: I think they're about the same price elsewhere with metal shelves - wooden ones are more expensive, obvs
