• You have, well used to have some grace where you could enter the bus lane a meter or two before the end if you were turning left.

  • There's some reference to that around, and it appears in a TfL training document as TfL's own policy. But it's not the law and it's up to councils to decide if they want to be lenient or not.

There's another photo showing I started cutting into the lane quite early, so I think I'm stuck paying it. Thanks all.

  • Hackney council give no leniency at all. My only bus lane ticket was from a bit further up the road where the bus lane ends outside the Hackney Empire. I only had 2 wheels just inside the bus lane but that is an infraction so there's unfortunately no argument.

I think it is important that bus lane infractions are punished, but the way it comes across to me is that because they pay a video operator to sit there and actively watch for infractions, whether real time or on playback, they need to generate enough revenue from tickets to pay for that operator.

The fact that my road positioning enabled a right turning bus to have sufficient room to navigate around my car and join the right turning lane, is not viewed as pertinent. I don't like when the "big picture" is ignored, but ultimately breaking the rules to help the over-arching goal is still breaking the rules, so I can't argue.
