The filth are useless eh. I'd make a complaint.
Pop into the workshop and grab a larger weapon, breaker bar or long seatpost come to mind.
Im not suggesting you attack anyone, I'd probably stay well behind the counter. Wouldn't bother attempting to detain anyone with a weapon in hand.
Also, I've always wondered what the legal implications are for detaining someone. It's sort of expected by security people. What constitutes false imprisonment?

It was pretty jarring, honestly. Thief was screaming he was going to hit me and trying to square up to me with the crankset in his dominant hand (his idiot gf was screaming too but at least was pushing him back). I started yelling back that he repaid our attempt at a favour by calling us ‘shits’ in a language he didn’t think I’d understand and was now stealing our stuff, without threatening him or even insulting him. I called 999, asked for police and didn’t notice when the cop picked up. It was then max. 10 seconds of back and forth with the thief, in front of like 12 other people, when I hear the cop say in my ear ‘if you don’t stop yelling I’m going to put the phone down on you.’ Guess everyone else is cool as a ducking cucumber when they call for police with someone threatening them with a weapon in the background?
Edit for clarity
At our bike shop we had someone verbally abuse our staff, be denied service, then walk out with an item from our shop while threatening to assault a team member (with a crankset in their hand). Police were called when guy refused to return our merch, and they said we should stop talking to the thief and shut the door, or they would hang up the phone (...). What’s the Law’s POV on detaining a thief? I’ve seen shoplifters detained at big chain supermarkets, usually in a headlock by one guy or by two guys one per arm, but those thieves just struggle without threatening violence or carrying a weapon. Also, is it worth requesting a review of the way the cop handled our call, or is it standard procedure to hang up on emergency callers when they can hear a shouting match and one party threatening the other? Worth mentioning the thief and his group were hanging out within eyesight for several minutes, and the cop said he would only pass on the info to the neighbourhood team or something similar (spoiler: no police showed up).
