We did Smart Box + Dumb TV for years. Years ago the Smart was a home built HTPC, more recently Virgin Tivo, ATV, Firestick, Youview...
We finally replaced the TV this year with an LG Smart TV and it's way way less faff. So much so I got another LG for the bedroom and ditched those boxes as well.
We've kept the Youview box for recording live TV (don't ask me why, husband wants it) but otherwise the TV does it all - we use it for Netflix, Amazon, Now, Plex and Youtube...
Mind, the stuff we watch is mostly old anyway so picture quality isn't a thing - only so much a TV can do to Sapphire and Steel !
