Even if your watch worked fine after this, the various different lubes on the parts will have lost some of their properties so its likely that it'll increase moving part wear over time. This is why a service is recommended. Or at least that is what I learned on the watch repair courses I did. No idea if true or not.
I did the exact same thing with my Hamilton Khaki. Crown open in a tupperware thing full of rice, covering the watch head with rice as well. Left it for a few days, solved the issue. I didn't service it afterwards.
