Help me out here. How far have Barca actually fallen? They've won three out of the five most recent league titles. Is it the fact they've only made it to the CL quarters or semis in recent years that is behind the opinion that they've gone to shite?
Its not as if this season has been a normal season. Its also not as if they have finished 8th in the league.

If you're top of the Italian, Spanish, or German league, failing to win the champions is failure.
(This means if you're Juve, Barca/Real, Bayern)
Also if you're PSG. -

I think the added factor is there has been rumblings in the past 2 seasons things haven't been right off the pitch recruitment management and some things in the press saying Messi has too much power, Messi not happy with teammates. This defeat is a culmination of things that ultimately expressed it self in a 8.2 defeat.

I just dont buy it. I get that finishing 2nd is a failure in Barca's eyes. It's the Barca way to shit the bed after a lackluster season. It's just that they were only 5 points behind first and 12 points ahead of 3rd in a season that was fucked for external reasons.
One outrageously bad result against Bayern does not a crisis make.

The low point was supposed to be their elimination by Roma in 18/19, then the real low point was losing a 3-0 advantage to Liverpool last season. Then this happened.
Add to that that pretty much every signing they've made since 2014 has flopped, and the squad last night had an average age of 30, there's not much going for them at all.
Barca and Real win every La Liga, it's a pre-requisite rather than an achievement for them.

It totally could be the start of a calamitous decline. I get that. Let's see how they do next season. Will they still be in decline if they win the league and have a good CL run?

On the other hand, what's left when Messi retires?

Barcelona didn’t win the league between 99 and 05, it could easily happen again if they’re not able to construct a team out of the individual talent they have to their disposal.

I don't think it's the start of a decline. I think they're already mid-decline and picking up pace.
They nearly got knocked out in the previous round but Messi rescued them, there have been recruitment issues for the last few years which haven't got any better, and Zidane was close to being fired in September as Real have massively underperformed at times this year and Barca still trailed them.

Interesting to read in the paper that when Sarri got sacked after not winning the CL it was a terrible decision, but for Barca a different story.

Haa Guardiola bottled his selection again? He always tries to be too smart in the Champions League knockout stages, rather than just putting his best side out.

Nothing wrong with the personnel but the system isn’t really working.
Lyon have been great. How were they only seventh in Ligue 1?

Two pivots and three centrebacks (one of whom is his best pivot). Also, how can you leave David Silva and Bernardo Silva on the bench?
-
• #153774
Bernardo has been poor this season. I’d have started David Silva or Foden. Gundogan and Rodri are so pedestrian at times.

Nah Gundogan is under-rated IMO, he keeps things ticking over a sets a lot of the tempo. This is a classic Pep over-thinking. I'm surprised he hasn't brought Fernandinho off yet.
It won’t be Xavi as he has pledged he allegiance to Font. There’s attempts to get rid of Bartomeu a year early but club statutes make this extremely difficult to achieve. Whoever is gonna come in will most likely be for a year only, similar to Bobby Robson before van Gaal.
Bielsa could be ideal for this purpose with a TD role lined up in a years time.
