• Yeah, that’s what I tried. I started on the inside and crossed over at the bottom. It’s so washed away right now as well. Was scared I was going to lose my front wheel in a deep rut.

  • Oh, I mean crossing over half way up, just before the apex of the turn basically

  • Ah, yeah, nah. It’s too washed away with deep ruts right now.

  • What do you do when you decide to stay in a warm bed at 6am instead of going for an early morning ride? You get a burrito at lunch and ride up some cool single track to eat it in the perfect winter sunshine instead. Sure, my ride was shorter, but I have no regrets.

  • I made my 6yo daughter walk up there the other day. So good.

  • Yeah, we’ve done part of it walking. My four year old wasn’t too impressed.

  • Some more urban exploration through (currently) disused salt pans. It was flat, so not very technical, but cool to look at.

  • Cool! Nice photos

  • If you ever feel like moving on the frame, I am trying to grow a Paconi stable in Melbourne

  • Yeah, I’ll probably keep this until it dies. It fits me well and I’ve reached a point where I don’t need to buy and sell bikes anymore.

    Nice Paconi though!

  • Decided to try flat pedals on this. Have been riding the Clydesdale’d Rockhopper with flats, and the flats on my Spacehorse with double sided Shimano pedals, so I’d thought I’d embrace the Crust ™️ lifestyle. Plus all my clipless shoes are way too vented for winter.

  • Did 65k’s with flat pedals today. Liked them. Might keep them on permanently.

  • Dreamy, both the bike and the scenery!

  • Lachlan Morton average the same speed with flat pedals and birckenstocks as he did riding clipless.
I think it is sort of silly to need special shoes to ride a bike.

  • Well in that case…

But it was refreshing riding in flats. Might even go down the Radavist approved Teva sandals path come summer!

  • I realize my comment may have come across as overly negative.
I was only trying to applaudyour choice and convey my own fondness of flats.

  • I think you mean UltraRomance approved Bedrocks...

edit: bike is looking ace though!

  • looks really ace, lovely job.

flat pedals slap imo, nice wide platform, lots of foot positions and good to have proper footwear to climb, ramble and shop

  • I didn’t take it as negative at all. I have been riding clipless (and clips and straps before that) for the last 15 or so years, so it’s nice to ride on flat pedals for a change.

I’ve been riding in Vans “fixie” shoes I bought years ago. Apparently they have a stiffer sole. It all comes around to fixed gears.

  • That's good.
Foot retention is currently the only thing holding me back (I realize the irony in this) from riding a fixed gear - that and having to build up the bike, ha!

  • Easiest option (both to get used to, and to avoid need for cycling shoes etc) would be flats with some straps a la restrap etc. Just go for it.

Clips and straps and some nice vintage track pedals would also be easy and allow for trainers, just you might be more restricted in trainer/shoe choice due to needing slimmer/low profile ones.

  • Another morning of bringing a knife to a gun fight thanks to a few days of rain and mud in places (which was the consistency of fresh dog shit… and just as sticky).

  • Makes me want to upgrade to something with massive clearance that can tackle more MTB trails… without being a true MTB. I like the look of this. Maybe I’ll keep an eye out for an old steel hard tail and get a Surly rigid fork.

Edit: I want one of these!

Edit: So I basically want a Surly Karate Monkey

  • Didn't Sam have some of those frames kicking around?

  • He did for a while, start of last year.
