They don't need to be local to you for selling. It's possibly helpful when buying if you are buying something exotic.
It can make it more convenient for things that require physical documentation exchange as posting stuff securely is a ball ache. But you will pay £200-£300 extra for the privilege of using a London based conveyancer.
