I had to help with the clear up from a burglary where the thieves were undisturbed for a few hours due to the alarm not working. The forensic officer who came to take prints etc. told me some horror stories about safes. According to this source they are like catnip to burglars.
It seems like you need an effective alarm to try and stop them having enough time to remove a safe by force.
Apparently metal detectors to find valuables is a thing so the floorboards method may not work.
