North Devon: In my view has the best beaches, and the ability to surf , but is weaker in terms of jobs and cities, with Barnstable being the biggest place, some really good riding around Exmoor and the Quantocks.
I have friends in Ilfracombe, so I was completely not surprised (and quite proud) when that bicycle was turned into a giant penis. On the other hand, my experience of North Devon is of harsh poverty and insane Hells Angels.

Exsctly, North Devon is like the Medway towns but with nicer coastline
I left at 18 and never went back as high cost of living, low salary's,limited job prospects and not a lot going on, back then it was going to Bristol or often Cardiff for gigs. I like going to visit family and would live their if I had a load of dosh to be mortgage free as the landscape is spectacular but their are other areas that better balance rural with access to urban (jobs and culture)

Woodside, so not exactly the nicest part.

Got 4 viewings booked in around Haselmere and Liphook for Saturday so suddenly getting a bit more real than just Rightmove voyeuring

Venture out to Sunny Petersfield and buy mine!

Was just checking a map to locate these places, and in my mind the big dong that sticks out south and west of Bristol is 'Cornwall'.
I owe Devon an apology as I've just found out Cornwall is just the little bell-end at the tip!

On behalf of Devon, describing Cornwall as a bell-end gets you a free pass!

Having very successfully moved from London to Bristol a few years ago, for some reason I can't stop looking at places like this now:
https://www.primelocation.com/for-sale/details/51875340Wondering if this is a slippery slope and in a few years I'll be living in the outer Hebrides...

That’s nice.

Some cracking riding around there, but also a lot of rain.
-
• #964
Rain may be a good thing if you're not connected to mains water!

I think the less romantic but more sensible intermediary step would be somewhere like Chepstow, Monmouth, Abergavenny, Crickhowell etc
-
• #966
Ooo, yeah I know it
Telford is on the rise though in terms of building houses but the area does need something improvement and they need to sort out the M54/M6 northbound link properly

Out of those I’d say Abergavenny would be the best option.
Still connected enough with quick road links and train line that links to Newport main line in about 35min if memory serves.
Also has had a lot of money spent on it in recent years meaning it’s a busy town with few empty shops.
Close enough to the Beacons/Wye valley/FoDI’ve always found Chepstow a bit odd.
I’ve good friends in Monmouth and visit fairly regularly. It pretty dog eared and many shops stand empty. I think the school owns loads of the building stock and don’t seem to have any interest in getting it let.
Crickhowell is beautiful and you can walk into the Beacons and Hay is relatively close but it’s a schlep to get anywhere else

Thanks, good info. I think Jack Thurston of the Lost Lanes books, who has presumably seen quite a few nice parts of the country, now lives in Abergavenny. I also saw this on his Twitter which is helpful:

people will be flocking to the rainier bits of the world in the next 50 years. i like to think i've been very forward thinking in that respect. having said that, people can be absolute FANNIES about rain. you're not made of sugar; it's not gonna melt you.

fuck yes.

@Crispin_Glover on behalf of somerset, hat tipped for your bell-end comments, but do not forget us!

I've been in Oz for over five years now, in a lot of ways it's been crap (but in a lot of other ways it's been fantastic) but the lack of rain and abundance of sunshine has made it all okay... Wouldn't change a thing!

I used to live right on the devon\somerset border, and my bro lives in somerset, so I like you lot.

Also I was gutted to move away from Abergavenny as I had the best GP by many miles I’ve had all my life

Pros and cons?
There's not much to say. It's what you think it is. If you want to live in Surrey it's a decent spot.
As mentioned Haslemere is nice, and I'd probably look there rather than Godalming.
