True dat. But we're hardly comparing the same thing. A big old American V8 is not the same as dammits v8 just the same way a 1.5 litre triple isn't an F1 engine... Although probably has a lot in common. My point really was that a little turbo engine propelling a car at say, 100mph or being driven hard is going to end up burning fuel a lot faster than the official figures will have the public believe.
Not all engines convert energy into motive power with the same efficiency though. If they did, F1 engine development costs would be a lot lower. And certain big block American V8s wouldn't produce under 250bhp and yet still struggle to get into double figures for mpg.
