• Not all engines convert energy into motive power with the same efficiency though. If they did, F1 engine development costs would be a lot lower. And certain big block American V8s wouldn't produce under 250bhp and yet still struggle to get into double figures for mpg.

  • True dat. But we're hardly comparing the same thing. A big old American V8 is not the same as dammits v8 just the same way a 1.5 litre triple isn't an F1 engine... Although probably has a lot in common. My point really was that a little turbo engine propelling a car at say, 100mph or being driven hard is going to end up burning fuel a lot faster than the official figures will have the public believe.
