For context, I get this mileage with a 5.4 litre V8.

This is truth of small capacity, high pressure turbo engines. Can't beat physics and thermodynamics. Make power = use energy.

Not all engines convert energy into motive power with the same efficiency though. If they did, F1 engine development costs would be a lot lower. And certain big block American V8s wouldn't produce under 250bhp and yet still struggle to get into double figures for mpg.
