  • It does seem to be an effect of the American brand of Christianity. Once your mind gets confused it just keeps getting worse.

  • It won't. "Racism" against white people (Karens and gammons in your example) is not a thing. At least, it is ENTIRELY different to the racism being called out by this thread and the current movement.

Defining a Karen as a jumped up, middle class white woman, or a Gammon as a furiously bigotted middle aged white man, is not racist. And to insinuate that it is, misses the point and devalues genuine concerns about racism and our systemic racist society.

For something to be a racist statement or act, there needs to be an element of privilege on the side of the actor or the intent to remove of privilege from the recipient. "Karen" and "Gammon" does none of that, except it calls those people given those labels out as the cunts that they likely are.

  • Being anti-racist, does not mean being colour blind.

  • Who claimed it was racist and how important is it that it meets 'a' definition of Racism?

Insults tied to identity cause hurt and harm. It would be the first insult in history if it didn't. And for sure "Karen" will be used against people who just happen to be white, female and middle aged. People do bad things.

  • There’s no verbal insult that any black person can throw at a white person that stings as much as nigga or placing black in front of any expletive. Cracker, honky, gammon, Karen, whitey, red neck, they all carry no weight because they don’t diminish the recipient in the way that black bastard, black cunt, black fucker does. Or spic, greaser, spook. There’s not 400 years of subjugation or oppression or persecution or colonialism behind any of those terms, and they don’t define any of those who are being abused, because they have the privilege to carry on, and still get bank loans, still get mortgages, still get interviews for jobs as they are in a position of power because they are western and white.
Being called a Karen isn’t going to destabilise their life, cause them to question their worth, or make them wonder about their place in a society, where the majority of people look and think like they do.
Being called a black bastard because you disagree with some white person over who should get on a bus first, will make you question a lot of things..

  • This post really lays it out. But while I don't disagree with the racial analysis, there's some serious misogyny in many of the uses of 'Karen', and women have certainly experienced enough subjugation and oppression for that to be problematic.

Go wild on the gammons though, obviously.

  • Couldn't agree more what's you guys feelings on the wiley interview yesterday https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYHYFOBB4Mo

  • He's obviously got some ideas in his head that he's expressing in the most terrible way.

  • Wiley seems to be speaking about his specific experiences within the music industry but it's hard to see how his comments won't incite more racism, I saw a video of some dude going mad at a Jewish family on a tube shouting racist shit at them, hard to see how it won't fuel this somehow, I was having a chat about this the other day with the missus about how it could be contrused as censorship, social media platforms shutting him down so quick, calling for his head on a platter, what he said about the kkk and Jewish people was way too fucking far imo. Generalising over a whole community, horrible. Also just to say I agree with what was mentioned above by @cornelius_blackfoot we had an incident a couple years ago where I asked a builder working next door to please move his van, he proceeded tell us we were a bunch of n***** picked up a hammer and started swinging it at me, was with my daughter at the time and he had to be ushered away by his colleagues, luckily she doesn't remember as she was young at the time, really made me feel awful for a good while. My mum also got abused not long ago because she made a mistake driving, she cried for the entire day. Abuse at any level however insignificant it may seem, needs to be challenged and called out.

  • Has he been stabbed more than 20 times by his Jewish manager?

  • His manager kept his MBE, Is this a normal thing? Surprised by that.

  • Also blaming Jewish people for dominating certain areas which is a result of centuries of discrimination is textbook antisemitism.

  • If you generalised like that about any other minority group it would be straight up racism, why should it be seen differently when it's against Jewish people?

  • Thanks chokalateboywonder, I appreciate your perspective.
    Yes, it does help.

  • standard "i'm sorry if you found the massively antisemitic things i said antisemitic" nonpology.

    fuck this guy. wasteman.

  • There was a lot of press last week about Kanye West being bi polar and that being behind some of his more unusual behaviour.

I’ve thought for a while that Wiley’s behaviour bore likeness to Kanye. I’m not an expert and not apologising for anyone but I do wonder if something similar is going on.

  • I agree there is huge disparity in severity between insults to black people and white people (on identity). My point is neither should be considered harmless. The disparity you describe is reflected to an extent in their popularity of use in our culture. I’m sure you acknowledge that damage from low level bigotry is significant when at scale.

  • I'd like to give actual mentally ill people the benefit of the doubt and say he's a dick until proven otherwise. The problem with the Kanye bi-polar thing is that his wife said it after he said and did a load of stuff that was potentially damaging to their "brand" so I'm taking it with a pinch of salt as he's been an arsehole for years (of course it's possible that being an arsehole is how his illness manifests itself).

Yes, we had that problem a while ago during the discussion about this:

    https://www.lfgss.com/comments/15236935/

(Goes on for four or five pages after that.)

  • I should just say in relation to the punching of anyone who throws around racist terms, no white person can tell any black person how they should react or what they should do. If said person of colour wants to lay the smack down on someone calling them a racist term, then that’s entirely up to them.

  • Sincere question, if i witnessed someone using racist language against somebody and thought the situation was going to escalate to violence i shouldn't say anything to try and calm the situation down as that would be conceived as trivialising how the abuse victim is feeling?

In my head telling the victim that i witnessed the abuse, would stand as a witness but ask that they don't retaliate with violence if it looked like that's where things were headed would not be such a bad thing. But do you feel that could very well escalate the situation and leave them feeling more isolated?

  • As a white dude:
    In this situation -
I would probably step in and try and stop violence. Because, well violence.
I mean, you'd probably also want to stop it because, hey, racist policing / legal system.

I don't think stopping violence is a bad thing.

  • You do what you feel is the right thing to do in that situation.
My statement was aimed at those who after the fact say that black people shouldn’t use violence against someone being racially abusive. If in the moment you’re there to calm that person down and in true Saturday night pub kicking out fashion to say that whoever’s being abusive isn’t worth it, I wouldn’t stop you.
But people who want to verbalise their racism need to understand there are consequences for it and not just the opprobrium of the Internet/twitter massive but real world physical ones if said black person decides it’s necessary.
