Prescription Sunglasses

  • Ta. Still keeping options for the missus. I think she's more comfortable using contacts with clear glasses over them now but prescrip glasses might be better for longer rides where contacts get a bit 'meh' or off-road where you don't want crap in your eyes.

  • My other half went with contacts and a pair of Rudy’s, but unlike her I can’t bear touching my eyes so contacts were a no-no.

I’m chuffed with the Jawbreakers as they have a massive area for the prescription part of the lens; it helps me spot when she’s about to jump me for the town sign sprint!

  • Maybe I don't want to give my other half that kind of advantage... hmm... :D

  • Lost my cheap Chinese prescription lensed raybans, and got my local opticians to make up some lenses for the same rayban’s I brought cheap off eBay.
Cost £70 for the lenses and I think I paid £35 for the rayban sunglasses off eBay.
I’m spending more getting some clear prescription inserts for two pairs of bolle’s that I’ll use for long distance rides..

  • I have these and they are awesome; inserts can fuck off

  • I bought some fake pocs from aliexpress and they came with some corrective inserts
A kind of small pair of glasses that clip into the real sunnies.

For £30 I got some prescription lenses for the inserts and so for about £45 I was set

They lasted about 3 years before the insert cracked

    Not a terrible option

  • How's the visibility if you're pretty tucked down? I find myself overstretching my neck just because I'm looking straight at the frame of my glasses or over it.

  • It’s pretty good. I’ve got quite a daft/aggressive saddle-to-bar drop and I can still see where I’m going when I’m in the drops. It’s not like I’m rocking a pair of Dennis Taylor’s but it’s enough that I let gravity help as much as possible on the descents.

  • Bit of a dredge. I'm after some cycling glasses, ideally Oakley Radar or Jawbreaker I reckon. Is there anywhere that'd slap some prescription lenses in a pair of glasses I bought secondhand?

  • Yes, reglaze my specs, somewhere upthread. Were cheap too

  • Actually, maybe I put it in a different thread.

    https://www.reglazemyspex.com

Cheap for basic stuff, gets pricey once you add coatings, thinner lenses etc. I got some inserts from a stupid cheap pair of aliexpress glasses done for less than a tenner, and were fine without any add-ons.

  • I've had new lens for my already-owned Racking Jackets done by https://www.extreme-eyewear.co.uk (sent away to oakley lens) and https://www.reglaze-glasses-direct.com (their own lens) in the past. Give them an email, both were pretty helpful.

  • Thanks both!

Also taking info from the current thread. I wonder if reglazemyspecs can do sutros. I get Oakley cheap through work,So that could be an option too.

  • I will give them a call tomorrow.

  • @Retro_Bastard I just went to the cart and it let me use a uk address at Roka. It did at 130 dollars in shipping and tax though. So that seems to work

  • How much does that workout for the Rokas all in £320? Still not that bad. I didn't realise there was already a thread for this otherwise i would have checked here before ordering mine. Just looked at my credit card statement and i paid £834 for both my new pairs from Eyesite and that was with 20% off second pair discount. I paid for a new eye test on top of that plus i did get to try all the glasses on and look at all the sample lense colours which they demonstrated the transitions with UV and they adjusted the glasses to sit straight on my wonky ears and broken nose so i did get a good service but once you know your prescription online is definitely cheaper. I went out for an evening spin on the bike last night and wore the Oakleys for the first time and was really impressed they do go crystal clear in the dark and the lenses are better quality than are in my regular glasses which weren't exactly cheap.

  • How many pairs can you get? :)

I just bought some cheap 'euro pro' Sutro ripoffs off Amazon with clear lenses and no fogging finally!

  • I suggest speaking with her optician about this option.
What can work and be beneficial for M_V might not be for her.
Unfortunately, as a healthcare professional who has worked in contact lenses for a bit in my career, I have noticed that many contact lens wearers tend to self-prescribe them with x,y,z lenses without any professional opinion/support.

It is true there are lenses out there that can be worn in extended wear as M_V but normally there is someone who helps you determine if this is a healthy choice and guide you through risk&benefits.

We do have only 2 eyes (most of us) and it is better to keep them super healthy.

  • She doesn't really like contacts so continues to wear her glasses. I've been trying to get her to get some bigger framed "sports" glasses to help her head/neck position when cycling but nothing's happened thus far.

  • Reglazemyspecs cant do the big cycling glasses.

I have just seen that RX sport does prescription Jawbreakers from £320 too..

I think the price on the Roka's is fine... but it i get the feeling that the returns would be a right faff

  • Great price on the jawbreakers but only clear, grey or back iridium lenses with plenty of frame colour options. The have the Bolle B-rock pros with plenty of lense options but only matt grey frames for £350 even a red/brown photochromic option for that price it seems which i really fancy now.

  • Rokas are out for me. Just checked my insurance and I can only claim for glasses sold by UK seller. So that gives me the following options.

So it's either jawbreakers. 350 ish (£200 covered by insurance)

Or I give the Bolle Barons a go. £130. All covered by insurance. Also a full glazed lens so no weird lines inside the lens

  • Jawbreakers all the way then i reckon. Have you got insurance paying for these or are you insuring them again loss or breakage. Maybe i need to insure mine against loss considering how expensive they were. I've got lense damage insurance through eyesite but I'm going to see if my Barclaycard covers me against anything else otherwise i see if I can add them onto my home policy or something.
