It is that badly communicated they are to protect others, and don't do much for the wearer hence we all need to play along?

Yes, because the Govt spent months telling people not to wear masks because they won’t protect them, etc. We’re all reaping what they incompetently sowed.

I have to say I don't watch TV or listen to radio, so perhaps I missing info.

So far though the official stuff for months has been...erm...lacking in clarity and consistency... :)
